5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden country music gem not on a major label December 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I first learned about this album when I discovered one track on an "acoustic" radio deejay sampler. I had to hear more of this "project". Boy, am I glad I did.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Tom Jutz was asked to write a few civil war related songs for a an album which fell through. But, after writing a few songs with his fellow Nashville songwriter friends, the concept of an album of new songs about the 1861-1865 period in the south peaked his interest and he continued to write, and co-write, songs with various friends. When he had 21 one songs (more than an album full), he called on his "performing friends" to appear on this self-produced album. Well-known Nashville session musicians headed Jutz's call and a few "big name" singers like John Anderson and Marty Stuart signed on. The 17 tracks chosen for this "Volume 1 - From Farmers to Foot Soldiers" have different lead singers (again, mostly folks - both male and female - known in Nashville but not outside) but it holds as a cohesive unit. As a "concept album" it's a success, though there isn't a story line per se. Jutz, who emigrated to the US eight years ago, takes lead vocals on two of the tracks but, in addition to writing credit on every song, he accompanies the singers on all the tracks.

The album comes with an 8-page booklet of track credits and photos. The lyrics, as well as "bonus tracks" that didn't fit on the 60-minute CD, are on the project's web site.

Since it's not on one of the major labels, this one is flying under the radar and will depend on "word of mouth" to get exposure. If you found you way to this review here on Amazon, and are wondering if it's worth getting, just listen to a few samples and you'll see this is one high quality product produced by a group of country artists that care.

As for me, I'm glad I found that track on the radio sampler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great History, Great Artists August 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Officially, "The songs on The 1861 Project explore this fascinating history from the perspective of the people who lived it, relating these stories from an entirely new and fresh perspective. " I say: Great piece of americana country songs with some great artists. Love it. -BRCFP
