Book Description

Dead gods. War. And the end of the world.

There are nineteen provinces in the Land held aloft by nineteen pillars. Above the earth there is sky, and nobody knows what goes below except the Nineteen Dragons.

That is all you need to know, but that is not all there is to be known.

The Device has been stolen and the godlike Dragons have been rendered mortal. Someone is murdering them one by one, and each death brings the world closer to its end. Unless the the Device is somehow restored to its deceased owner, the Dragons are doomed to destruction--and the human world will go with them.

PLEASE NOTE: There are blank pages and unusual formatting as a method of storytelling. This is intentional.

Review

"S.M. Reine's 'The 19 Dragons' is something else... This novella is not simply read. It's experienced." -L. David Hesler, author of The Godblood Saga

Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write fantasy novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.

A few fun facts about me:
- The #1 song on the day I was born was "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, which means my life is a Rickroll.
- I have three black cats and one black dog, but it's not an obsession, I swear.
- I am a full time writer these days, which means I will never wear a pair of heels to the office again. Viva la sweatpants!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique story with a unique style July 24, 2011
By Keri
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I haven't read much steampunk, but this book was recommended to me & I "met" the author on twitter (@smreine) previously and she's super-nice, so I wanted to give her book a try.

I LOVE the style of this book. It's written in present-tense, which is an unusual choice, but it gives the book a more surreal and otherworldly feel that fits with the story. There's a chapter for each dragon, so when I first started reading it I thought it was more of a collection of impressionistic short stories in the same setting.

Each chapter, though each is about a different character, builds on the previous and adds to your understanding of this unique world. The author reminds me of Steven Brust in that elements and characters that you didn't think were important are brought up again in later chapters and become integral to the story (and it makes me feel smart as a reader to remember the previous details and piece the story together myself).

The story is paced perfectly. It gets more and more tense and fast-paced as you read it, until you're on the edge of your seat, afraid the world is going to fall apart- literally. The ending is neat and satisfying and fits perfectly with the rest of the story.

I highly recommend this book- for $0.99 it's a great deal and a really fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that is expertly woven February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a novella. Not quite a novel, but not a short story. It has Steampunk like qualities, and is a delightful fantasy. And the author, SM Reine, weaves a wonderful story around an astonishing world.

There are 19 provinces, and there is war. There are balloon flying ships, and there are robot destroyers. There is the great ocean. There are floating cities. And this is all held together by the "Pillars" or the 19 Dragons.

There is a "Device" that allows the Dragons to become human, and to become dragons when they die, and to become human again. This is the cycle.

But the First Dragon is killed and the Device is stolen, and the pillars start to fall and the world starts to deteriorate. It is up to the Second Dragon to figure out who stole the Device, get it back, and bring the dragons and the world back.

I found the book fascinating as I was taken through this world. I found the magic here is the story telling, expertly done. I didn't want to put the book down!

Even the formatting added to the story! It is surprising what you can do with the formatting in a Kindle book that couldn't be done in a print book. And SM Reine made full use of the medium.

I highly recommend this book. Well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 19 Dragons Review July 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The 19 Dragons is a steampunk novella. It is about 19 dragons whose lives are linked to 19 pillars that hold up the 19 provinces of the land. I really enjoyed reading The 19 Dragons as it was very original and thoroughly entertaining.
There was a very unique prose to The 19 Dragon which I really enjoyed. The writing has a sort of poetic element to it that makes it a really different and enjoyable read. The writing style gave the whole story a feeling of reading an old fairy tale sort of story.
The story itself was very unique and I really liked it. The story was quite mysterious which kept me reading on as I just had to know more about the 19 dragons and what was happening to them, not to mention who was doing it.
I also loved that there was a twist in the story that I did not see coming. It was really awesome to see that as it's not very often that books surprise me anymore.
Overall, I thought that The 19 Dragons was really enjoyable and extremely well-written. The 19 Dragons is awesome. It's got enough steampunk elements for fans of steampunk but at the same time I think that it would be a good read for those who aren't the biggest fans of steampunk. If it sounds like your kind of book definitely check it out because it is really good and you will not be disappointed in it!

I really liked the writing style of the book, and the flow of the book was good, but I agree that the characters were very flat. No reason was ever given that I can recall for the villain to do what he did; if there was a reason given, it didn't stick with me, though I only finished reading it yesterday. Overall, great concept, but lacking in the details that would have made it a truly great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different November 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this strange story set in a steampunk world. It's quite different to anything I've read before and memorable because of it. Dragons have taken human form to avoid humans slaying them. They move from one vessel to another, immortal, until someone steals the staff with the `device' on the top. Then the first Dragon dies and all the other dragons become mortal. I have no idea why, but in a story this length that didn't really matter. Several more dragons in human form are murdered and each time one dies, a whole province associated with that dragon disappears leaving a void where before there was land. It's a mystery why anyone would be doing this and it appears that is it one of the dragons. In the course of the story we meet the dragons, hear their stories and in many cases witness their demise. The ending is clever. It's a great introduction to SM Reine's work and the excerpt from `Six Moon Summer,' in the back of the book shows it to be a promising read. I'd definitely read more of her work.
