While I've played the piano for several years, I've never had formal training on chords, and this helped me learn the different chord types -- so in this way this book was helpful.

However, in general it is a very poorly written book, for the following reasons (random order):
1. The "call-outs" (selected text phrases in the margins) were often simply ridiculous (fault of publisher) (MINOR, but irritating)
2. The staffs for you to use for examples (this is a workbook) were too small (fault of the publisher) (MINOR, but irritating). But then it has some blank staff "worksheet" pages for what purpose I cannot imagine (fault of publisher) (MINOR, but irritating).
3. Talks some about chord progressions, but doesn't provide any practical examples. MAJOR, MAJOR problem. This lack of explanation is the most disappointing part of the entire book.
4. Has completely inaccurate information "The [seventh] chord [is] the most popular chord". That's simply ridiculous. The major chord is the most popular (MINOR but irritating).
5. Has "instant arranging" practice, which unless you know the tunes (I knew some) was a useless and perplexing exercise
6. Has exercises writing chords (OK, that is helpful) and chord progressions, but beyond a point, the purpose of these exercises is unimaginable.
7. Since this is a PIANO book, you of course want to put it on your PIANO. But the binding is terrible, and if you get it to lay flat-ish so you can put it on your piano music stand, all the pages fall out (fault of publisher) MAJOR problem.

Overall, the author (who may be very accomplished musically -- I don't know) doesn't seem to have the viewpoint of the reader, and doesn't know what the reader (who would be buying this book) would know or not know.

Overall, the book is a big disappointment and sloppily made -- surely there are better alternatives.

I have rated this only 30-star because it stops short of being the comprehensive work I expected. It is good in a limited way but should and could go much deeper into the subject. Its usefulness would be much improved.

This book was recommended by my daughter's piano teacher, so I bought it. Although the exercises are okay, but they were not fun. Instead it became a turn off for my daughter. Don't buy this book if your kids are doing well with the piano and are having fun playing the Piano. This book is like sending an A-Student into remedial lessons or summer school. Instead get some songbooks or sheet music which they like to sing and play. Make Piano lessons fun... not a chore.

I'm only about 25% into the book, and it's ok. I will say that the instructions for the assignments can come off a bit vague. The examples given aren't always reflective of the work to be done by the student. But I'll admit that I wasn't expecting a super-in-depth book; simply judging by the title. Nothing horrible, nothing amazing.
