I tried most diets advertised, from Atkins to WW, South Beach... they all work but for the time you are adhering to rules. Only rule 400 cal fix has is that each of your 3 meals a day is around 400 cal. That's it. If you decide to go with a beer and handful of pretzels so be it. Nothing is off limits, however, you gotta stick with 3 meals a day and 400 cal each. You will not be hungry! 400 cal breakfast is HUGE!!! This way you restrict calories to 1200 which will be more than enough restriction to lose weight. That's pretty much what all the diets boil down to. Calorie restriction. Well if you add some exercise to your plan more power to you! You'll lose more faster, feel great, and have a body ready for 2011 bikini season!!!

Disclosure: I am a registered dietitian in private practice in NYC and I use this book with my patients/clients. It is a great, great read. It is full of simple ideas. No crazy fad diets or extreme deprivation techniques. This is the most sound meal plan I have found to date.

This book has great potential to help you make calorie controlled meals. Since my husband, daughter and I are both on calorie controlled diets, this is an awesome addition to my cookbook shelf.

It wasn't hard to find recipes in this book requiring things I regularly use or already have in my kitchen, so I give this book a big thumbs up for that. I've tried about 15 recipes, and liked most of them. The trouble I have with this book is that it requires a lot of planning on my part (and sometimes quite a bit of cooking in advance) if I want to use these recipes to keep to a 1200 to 1600 calorie diet. I just don't have the luxury of time to cook dinner every night, and then prepare a lunch & breakfast for the next day. One solution I tried was planning what to eat for each meal for a week or two at a time, and then using weekends to cook a lot of stuff in advance. For instance, I made a double-batch of the mini quiches. I had enough to last two weeks, eating 2 each morning. Plus they were portable, a must for me because I eat after I work out at the gym first thing in the morning and need something I can take with me easily.

I also found that sometimes I ended up with waayyyy more servings than the book said I would with some of the recipes, even though I followed them to the letter. This was particularly true for salads, which meant they were hard to get eaten before they went bad, unless I ate them for lunch and dinner several days in a row.

This book still didn't solve the biggest problem I have with most diets that involve lots of food prep: who's got the time????
