Editorial Reviews

Review

"Historians, students of firearms, and museum curators in addition to arms collectors, will find this book indispensable . . ." --Lee Rutledge, Field Editor, Gun Report

"Virtually a mini-encyclopedia . . . this reference piece is a must." --Phil Spangenberger, Guns & Ammo

This new, revised and expanded 4th edition softbound volume is twice the size of the original [edition] . . . it contains a baker's dozen of chapters, a dozen apendicesand period photographs. Each chapter is devoted to a portion of the rifle [as well as the] tools, accessories . . . and the various [ammunition] carriers and belts used to carry cartridges. It's really a valuable reference manual for museum curators, arms historians, authors, military historians, and anyone else wanting to learn more about one of the major items used in opening the American West. --Larry S. Sterett, Gun Week

Ever find a nice looking old rifle in a shop or at a gun show but were worried about one or two non-standard features? Is it genuine, or is it a fake? Should you buy it and risk paying good money for a "parts gun," or leave it and risk losing a valuable addition to your collection?

This little volume can help you decide. It has detailed descriptions of all the standard-configuration .45-70 "trapdoor" Springfields--all the parts, all the markings. But it also documents non-standard configurations that are nonetheless genuine and the history that explains why they were made that way. Why do so many 1884 rifles have 1873 breech blocks? Is it possible that that 1888 rifle came equipped with a two-piece trigger guard rather than the standard one piece? This is the sort of minutia that makes our friends and family roll their eyes but that enthralls collectors of antique firearms, and it is just the sort of detail the authors provide.

Small and light enough to take with you, this book should be standard "hunting equipment" for collectors on the prowl.

Using line drawings, charts and well-researched texts, Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch bring us a comprehensive, part-by-part reference book dedicated to an important U.S. military firearm. I have a couple of .45 Springfields and I found both of them covered in detail in this book.

This isn't light reading, but if you've got a .45 Springfield you're trying to identify, or restore, this book is worth its weight in gold.
It's thoroughly-researched, well written and a must-have if you're shooting, collecting, restoring or trying to identify one of these historic rifles.

North Cape Publications is famous for its FOR COLLECTORS ONLY series and this book follows that format faithfully and successfully. I gave it five stars and keep right next to M.D. Waite's and B.D. Ernst's TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD.

5th edition with 3 additional chapters. Excellent reference book for the 45-70 Springfield rifle. Useful for the regular guy who wants to research the family rifle that has been found in the attic or was dad's from when he was a kid. Has a breakdown of all the modifications and upgrades that the 1873 went through in it's extensive development. Excellent parts identification by model. A very valuable and useful reference book.

If you have any questions about your Springfield you can find the answers here. I actually communicated via email with the author and his response to my questions were almost immediate. A very detailed, illustrated and descriptive publication.
