I hate diet books on principle. I have never bought an "exercise" book. This book was suggested to me by a friend because my energy level was lagging; work piling up, too tired on the weekends, weight gain etc. I was impressed! Clearly written, easy to understand but doesn't talk down to you, and SUGGESTIONS THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE! Plus, I am an academic guy, so the fact that this book is BASED ON REAL RESEARCH STUDIES goes a long way with me. And the sex chapter will rock your world.
In summary, the book is a terrific combination of intelligence, practicality, science, and good sound advice. The exercise section is like having your own personal trainer, and the mental attitude parts are like having your own shrink on your nightstand! BUY THIS BOOK!!!

"Does it work?". I didn't see any reviews where someone followed the plan for 7 days and said whether it worked for them or not. So, I'm here to say "Yes, I followed it for 7 days. And, yes, it worked for me."

I didn't want to buy the book unless I knew it would work for me, so I got a copy from the library and followed the plan for 7 days. I read it with an open mind and followed the plan pretty carefully. After 7 days I have a lot more energy and lost 1.5. lbs., not a lot but I'm 5'3" and don't have a lot to lose. So I bought the book, not for the diet but for the lifestyle ideas. I'm heading into week 3 now.

This is not a diet book, it's just what the title says, a "7-Day Energy Surge". Yes, there's a diet plan, for 7 days only, which I followed very carefully. Was the plan easy to follow? Not always. Did I get hungry? Of course.

I've been on diets before and I know that at first just cutting down on food increases my energy level for a few days. With this book, my energy level has been up and down, generally higher than before I started the plan. I didn't realize how up it was till I found myself at 6:30 AM going for a 5-mile walk with my dog, something I haven't done in several years.

What I liked, and what worked for me, was not just the food plan but the integration of other activities - exercise, breathing, music, meditation, good sleep hygiene, Biehler's broth (weird but not bad-tasting, kind of like drinking lawn clippings), and even cold showers (Oh, my! Feel the energy surge with a cold shower at 5 AM).

I'll report back in a couple of months to say whether it's still working.

This book had some great information but a lot of it was what we have been hearing before: eat right, exercise, get enough sleep.

There was some new stuff. In the exercise section the author discounts cardio and says you only have to do strength training (except for walking). As someone who HATES cardio you think I would love this advice. But I have never noticed major and quick weight loss without cardio. Of course this book was more about having more energy. I do notice that cardio seems to make me more tired. But I would think then, one should just do cardio closer to the evening rather than not at all, since cardio relieves excess weight and weight also drains your energy.

Even if you disagree with the cardio advice though, there's some new stuff: how you should breathe in order to have more energy, more sex for more energy, mood/attitude's affect on energy, and music's affect on energy. Still I wouldn't say the info is revolutionary, just not usually what people think of when they think about more energy. It kinda goes like this: the deeper you breathe, the more sex you have, and the more positive your thoughts=more energy. Music is a little more involved of a section.

Worth getting if you're into this stuff or if you're from an old school way of thinking and having heard about how to breathe properly and attitude's effect on energy.

As a fan of Jim Karas's exercise philosophy (cardio free, interval strength training), I was naturally intrigued to read this book. However I'm not a reader. Typically I start a book, and never finish it. Not this time. I'm shocked to agree with the other reviewer here, but I couldn't put this down. The conversational style with which Jim writes combined with the practical and REAL tips he gives for increasing your energy levels made this a pleasure, and sometimes addicting to read! I was even quoting the book (and I never quote books)! Especially the facts and recommendations in the SEX chapter. If you really want to know what a healthy sex life can do for your mind, body and soul - read this chapter. For those that like a true diet book, that info is also here but infused within humorous stories, and real-life testimonials so you're not bogged down with all the math and calculations and can start applying strategies to your own life.

My wife and I are from Chicago and have run into Jim Karas several times at various speaking events and parties. I've never met anyone quite like Jim as he'll give the Energizer Bunny a run for his money!!!

The book is absolutely brilliant as it reads quick and filled with useful research and easy to do tips. Plus, my wife loves how Cynthia chimes in and gives a women's perspective on various parts - especially on sex!

I also really enjoyed the book he wrote before this, Cardio-Free Diet - very provocative! Check it out here - The Cardio-Free Diet
