Editorial Reviews

The 88 is a band that defies convention and easy labeling, their fans are as electric and widespread as their music. Thanks to catchy pop hooks, irresistible melodies, and high energy live performances, The 88 have caught they eyes and ears of fans and rock peers. This has led to opening slots for Ray Davies, Smashing Pumpkins, B-52s, The Flaming Lips, Rilo Kiley, Matt Costa, Black Francis and Elliot Smith to mane a few. Yet their accomplishments surpass their boundaries of the music industry as their songs have been used and featured in countless TV shows, films and commercials. Their music has been featured on hit television shows like How I Met Your Mother, Grey s Anatomy, Weeds, Gossip Girls and Community (they perform the main theme song), as well as in national Sears, Target, NASCAR, and NFL campaigns.

Now, in 2010, The 88 releases their finest collection of songs yet. Melding various influences raging from British Invasion-era bands to 70s glam and garage rock, the self-titled album will appeal to audiences everywhere. This is especially evident in the rollicking and rocking first single, They Ought to See You Now which features additional vocals by Ray Davies

4.0 out of 5 stars more improvement December 28, 2010

This is definitely a step up from previous releases. Shows substantial growth in songwriting. Vocals are outstanding throughout and the songs cover much wider sonic ground than previous cd's. I think this group has a nice future. I would definitely start with this one if you are interested in exploring some modern power pop from a group that would have been just as confortable if they had existed in the late 60's, early 70's. No obvious standout tune, but the first few are all outstanding and nothing is anything but good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice December 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I discovered The 88's while doing genealogy research some years ago because the lead singer has my maiden name and it's an unusual one. Turns out we are only distantly related, but I was interested enough in the music to go see them in concert. Their Over and Over album is very 60's retro and I loved it, but my husband was only so-so about it. I kept seeing their music pop up on Target commercials, on Weeds and in movies, and now they have made this album which my husband really likes. He thinks they are getting better and he's a good judge of music. I think the second half of the album is the best - very soulful. My favorite track is Takes It Away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great bit from the 88! August 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is just a very rock solid album from The 88. Perhaps not as amazing as their first two releases, it still showcases the kind of music they love to make and do quite well. Is the glass half full? I think so!

Go ahead and grab this album and enjoy. It is what i'd like to call a bit more of a slowburn in terms of getting into it versus earlier pieces . (although somewhat similiar to there major label debut) Also, Ray Davies (although i cannot hear him) helped sing along on one of the tracks. A little Kink connection never hurts!

Excellent, everything as advertised. This is to Amazon. You should not require a minimum amount of words. I think I summed up all I wanted to say in four.Amazon is going to deter people from writing reviews.
