Book Description

Provocative, fresh, and profound, The 99%: How the Occupy Wall Street Movement Is Changing America reveals how in a tiny park, a bold idea broke through to broad public consciousness: that regular people can take on the entire economic and political system.

Journalists, eyewitnesses, artists, teachers, union leaders, rappers, progressive icons and ordinary citizens follow the spark of hope as it leaps from city to city, state to state, and across the ocean, igniting a new conversation about our society and the future. They share the sights, the sounds, and the solidarity of the early days, and take you on the drama-charged journey from the concrete of lower Manhattan to the mass marches and the police violence that swept across the globe.

Experts delve into the root causes and long-term trends that have driven the movement, from economic inequality to the corrupt influence of money in politics.

Created in less than a month by the editorial team at AlterNet, featuring dozens of participants, experts, and the inspirational every day people who have made OWS a success, The 99% is the first comprehensive look at the incredible phenomenon that has made the hope of a better life possible for millions.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT, BROAD-BASED, VIEW OF THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT October 3, 2012
Format:Unknown Binding
The "Acknowledgements" section of this 2011 book states, "As the Occupy Wall Street Movement was heating up and gathering momentum, AlterNet writers and editors were working feverishly to cover the rapidly breaking and developing story... It dawned on us that we were in the midst of an historical moment. So we decided to document what happened in the first two months of OWS for both inspiration and historical record. We wanted to provide a detailed documentation for why OWS was happening now, and offer some analysis of how OWS can tackle the corporate dominance of America and the globe. We produced this book in about three break-neck weeks... 'The 99%' tells the gripping story of the emergence, expansion and influence of a phenomenon that is poised to transform our ideological landscape and unleash our potential to reinvent our society." (Pg. 9, 14)

One person suggested the slogan: "why not call ourselves the 99 percent? If 1 percent of the population have ended up with all the benefits of the last 10 years of economic growth, control the wealth, own the politicians, why not just say we've everybody else?" (Pg. 26) Of the young participants, they note, "These were kids who played by the rules. They were rewarded with a future of constant harrassment, of being told they were worthless deadbeats by agents of those very financial institutions that---after having spectacularly failed to play by the rules, and crashing the world economy as a result, were saved and coddled by the government in all the ways that ordinary Americans such as themselves were not."
