Charney and Goldbeck s wonderful book of poems and activities will appeal to children as they move through elementary school, exploring food and farming using the alphabet to establish their place in history, geography, art, literature, science, the kitchen, and let us not forget jokes and riddles! Even adults will laugh and learn at least a fact or two and maybe each of us (young and old) will find an interest in trying something new! --Fern Gale Estrow, MS, RD,CDN

The New York Times When School Is Out, Getting Good Food In By JANE E. BRODY June 12, 2007. A simple and beautifully illustrated new book by Steve Charney and David Goldbeck, The ABCs of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond, is one good way to interest youngsters in these most nutritious foods, which are readily available, and tastier, in the summer. Part 1 is a series of easy-reader alphabet poems about common and uncommon produce, from apples to zucchini and including (wild) xemenia for the X page. Part 2 offers a host of enticing food facts, recipes and fun. A simple summer dinner might be zucchini with linguini, a recipe that includes scallions, sweet red pepper, tomatoes, fresh basil and parsley, and, of course, zucchini. Or you could bake Z s Mystery Cake, with whole-wheat flour, low-fat yogurt, chocolate chips and shredded zucchini. The goal is to familiarize children with foods that are good for them. In many cases, children can help with the preparation, which often encourages them to taste, if not fully consume, something new and different. With yard space, you might even try growing some of these foods. A friend who has done just that with the help of her very young daughters had no trouble getting them to eat all kinds of vegetables, even before they were cooked. --The New York Times/Jane Brody

[The ABC's of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond] is FANTASTIC.... I felt like a kid in a candy store. Oooh, aahhh -- beautiful pictures, creative rhymes, and peppered with the best "corny" (what other word could I use) jokes to keeps kids and their parents laughing. I love the activities, the recommended books for further reading, and the mix of photos and drawings. I love the color saturation too... --Melinda Hemmelgarn, M.S., R.D.

What a terrific way to learn about fruits and veggies! This book is really two in one. The first part, the ABC s, is made up of a combination of clever poetry by Steve Charney, and funny illustrations. Part two,... again goes through the alphabet, but in much more detail. Co-author and best-selling food writer David Goldbeck has really done is homework. Offering recipes, jokes and fun facts along the way, the book is delightful all the way around. --Kidville News

The ABC's of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond: Delicious Alphabet Poems Plus Food, Facts and Fun for Everyone is much more than an alphabet book - in addition to brief, rhyming poems about fruits and vegetables connected to each letter of the alphabet, The ABC's of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond is packed with tasty recipes, jokes, amazing facts, activities, recommendations for further reading, and more. Illustrated with full-color photographs of tasty fruits and veggies, as well as cartoon-style pictures giving life to the poems, The ABC's of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond is a welcome introduction not only to the alphabet, but also to eating healthy. Highly recommended.

If any of you saw that TV show last fall in which young kids could not identify a real potato, you know this book is a must read! Our youngsters have lost touch with real food, especially vegetables. This book is colorful, fun, and gives kids excellent information on what they need to know about fruits and vegetables. We bought the book for several kids and they loved it.

As a mom of two picky eaters, I'm in love with this book!! It cleverly introduces children to a wide range of healthy foods while providing great entertainment in the form of bright beautiful pictures and fun rhymes and jokes. I've tried a few of the recipes with great success and we've added a few vegetables to our weekly meals as a result. Highly recommended!

the book itself is really very interesting and informative and lots of fun ..... the pictures give opportunities to talk even more about a certain letter than what was written ..... this is NOT your run-of-the-mill ABC book and would recommend it to anyone who would like something out of the ordinary for those learning their ABC's ..... it's a wonderful "spring-board" into a ga-zillion different directions !!!!!

the problem was with the condition of the book I received ..... BUT ..... I must say that when I told the bookseller about it ..... the matter was taken care of VERY proffessionally and FAST !!!!!!

I WOULD use this bookseller in the future !!!! :) :) :)
