More About the Author

H. Ward Silver has the experience of a 20-year career as an electrical engineer developing instrumentation and medical electronics. He also spent 8 years in broadcasting, both programming and engineering. In 2000 he turned to teaching and writing as a second career. He is a contributing editor to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and author of the popular 'Hands-On Radio' column in QST magazine every month. He is the author of the ARRL's Amateur Radio license study guides and numerous other articles. He developed the ARRL's online courses, 'Antenna Design and Construction,' 'Analog Electronics,' and 'Digital Electronics.' Along with his comedic alter-ego, Dr Beldar, Ward is a sought-after speaker and lecturer among 'hams.' When not in front of a computer screen, you will find Ward working on his mandolin technique and compositions.

Since the telegraphy requirement was dropped in early 2007---the only thing that stands between you and an amateur radio license is a 35-question, multiple choice exam. The exam questions are drawn from a pool of over 350 prospective questions in the following areas:

T1 FCC Rules
T2 Operating Procedures
T3 Radio Wave Characteristics and Propogation
T4 Amateur Radio Practices
T5 Electrical Principles
T6 Electical components, semiconductors, circuit diagrams, component functions
T7 Station equipment
T8 Modulation modes, amateur satellite operations, operating activities, non-voice communications
T9 Antennas and feedlines
T0 Safety

A technical whiz can breeze through T5 and T6--but other sections deal with law (T1) and common operating practices (T2)--details that cannot be deduced from fundamental principles...so virtually everyone is going to need to bone up on some of the material to successfully pass the exam.

This book is terrific. It contains all of the questions (and answers) in the current pool (valid until June 2014). The book is logically organized to walk through the various relevant aspects of amateur radio and along the way provides detailed answers to every question in the pool.

Also included is a chapter offering guidance on setting up your first station.

As a bonus, there is a CD ROM with a Windows Application that will generate sample exams or will let you work your way through all of the questions in the pool providing instant feedback (including background material).

A terrific book that covers the subject admirably.

I used this book along with the free practice tests on eham.net, and passed the real exam with a score of 33 out of 35. I spent about 3 weeks studying off and on, and also consulted a few outside sources for more information on inductors & capacitors (just for more of an understanding ... completely overkill for passing the Technician exam).

The testing software on the CD-ROM has some major bugs in it; I was not able to review which questions I missed once completing a practice exam! Perhaps this is an issue with my OS (Windows 7 Enterprise w/ all the latest updates)?

In case anyone is wondering, HAM Radio for Dummies has some useful information, but is not intended as a study guide for passing the Technician exam. Also, don't waste time or money on any of the sites that charge a fee for practice tests--eham.net has it covered (again, for free).

When ordering this book, make sure you're actually getting the latest edition--there are several older editions still available and they do not cover the same material/question pool.

Good luck, and, 73s

-Chris

P.S. I just ordered the General and Amateur Extra books! :)

The Ham Radio License Manual for Technician was everything I needed and expected. I did not have the available time to attend an instructor led class to learn this information. The book was written and presented in a very easy to understand way. I'm now looking forward to progressing on to learn the the General license material.
