Book Description

Dandy Dan McCracken is a rogue wandering around eastern Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. Wounded and on the run from the law, he's rescued and nursed to health by the lovely ward of Benedict Arnold's procurement officer. When the girl's husband returns from the front, McCracken falls in with British spies. He switches sides again as a result of love and becomes a hero, not through choice but circumstance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable American History December 30, 2010

I downloaded the Kindle edition of this book after reading about it on Lindermuth's blog.

I enjoy Lindermuth's work, and this book ranks at the top. The first-person presentation made me feel as if Dan McCracken returned from the 18th century, plunked himself down at my kitchen table and begin telling me his story. The authentic details and language are excellent and Dan's situation--from one misadventure to another--pulled me in.

Dan is a likeable rogue struggling to get by in the upheavals of the American Revolution. That his struggle includes some rather devious plans actually show the timbre opf the times--the do-anything-to-get-by aspect of the early society. Historical information about lifestyle and the politics of the war come through Dan as an accessory to his character, and not in preachy historian style.

That Dan finds his lady-love during all this further embroils him in nefarious and dangerous situations. His change from a fairly self-centered knave to a man of commitment developed smoothly and believably.

If you want some accurate American History with engaging action and characters, The Accidental Spy will fill the bill.

Fellow writer John R. Lindermuth's fiction is known to me in the various ezines. If you like historical novels set during the American Revolutionary War, the first-rate THE ACCIDENTAL SPY should satisfy. "Dandy Dan" McCracken, a grifter and clockmaker operating in eastern Pennsylvania, is quite a colorful protagonist. He's not an evil man per se, but he hasn't really grown up until his misadventures thrust him into the role of a spy for the patriots. At the same time, he falls deeply in love with the beautiful Diana, and she makes a real man of him in more than one way. If we all could only be so fortunate. I enjoyed the flavorful characters, picturesque landscape, and idiomatic dialogue. This is great escapist fiction to lose yourself in reading. I know I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A First Rate Romp June 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lindermuth's "The Accidental Spy" was a surprising delight. Not sure what my expectations were when starting it, but the characters and story quickly took over and kept my Kindle in my hand much of the day and all evening (okay, until 3 a.m.).

The author knows his stuff as far as the region and history. However, this is no overly detailed plodding treatise. Rather, it's a rollicking romp with a genuine scalawag and scoundrel as the main character. His adventures in old Philadelphia include spying and being a double agent -- with the women as well as the politics.

Lindermuth displays a real knack for compelling storytelling. I'm looking forward to reading more of his novels. Bravo and kudos!
