Good quality book, and fun and entertaining to read. I don't care for the audio CD version that it comes with, but my 7 year old daughter enjoys listening to it while she reads along in the book. The narrator (a man with what sounds like a British accent)reads it in a rather dry and unenthusiastic, nearly monotonous, fashion. Not quite as bad as using Kindle Text-to-Speech or a GPS voice or something like that, but not up to the level of most audio books. Overall, I recommend this book for adults, and children as young as middle-schoolers. Younger children may enjoy it as well, but will probably want certain terms and concepts explained to them to fully understand the allegory.

"The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible" by Ken Schoolland, a professor of economics at Hawaii Pacific University, is the best way I know of introducing people, young and old, to understanding politics and economics. In the spirit of Jonathan Swift, Schoolland tells the story of a seaman named Jonathan Gullible who is shipwrecked on the island of Corrupto, and runs into a variety of challenges that both entertain and educate the reader in politics and economics.

My three favorite stories are: 1. the case of the tall tax, where taller people on the island are penalized because they are naturally more successful in life; 2. the case of merryberries, a fruit that makes people get high naturally and therefore is banned by the authorities; and 3. the case of the Applause-a-meter, a machine that measures the public's level of approval of various statements by politicians on the island. The political leaders' slogan is "We believe what you believe."

After each chapter, Prof. Schoolland asks the reader a variety of questions about the issues raised in each story.

Read it and you'll see why JG has been translated into 50 languages! It is the perfect gift to students or anyone who wants to understand the basic economic and political issues of today without having to take a college course.
