Book Description

For Sabre Orin Brown, life is good; she has it all...or would have, if only she could solve the mysterious disappearance of her brother. The search for her brother and her career as a Juvenile Court Attorney collide when she defends a nine-year-old whose father will go to any length to obtain custody.
Sabre finds herself immersed in a case with too many unanswered questions. Her quest for the truth takes her coast to coast and five years into the past. Confronted with mysterious clues and strange occurrences, Sabre is threatened by someone wanting to make her suffer the unbearable anguish of losing everything--including her life.
As Sabre's passion to find the answers intensifies, she discovers a twisted history of desperation, deceit, and revenge. And she discovers how obscure and treacherous the truth can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow August 17, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Need a break from stories about ivory tower law firms and want to get down and dirty in the streets? My wife is a legal thriller junkie and told me it was the best novel she read in years. I do not usually read her type of books but told her I would see how I liked it. Well I did not like it, I loved it and finished the book in three days. The story tugs on your heart while you are on the edge of your seat, stange combination, but it works and works well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I actually met the author in a Barnes & Nobel and bought this book partly so as not to hurt her feelings by turning her down. I didn't read the book for two years later. I am a Sue Grafton fan, so I couldn't help but compare The Advocate to Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series. The Advocate was every bit as good as Grafton's early stories and I enjoyed it very much. Obviously, as a series progresses there is more development and one becomes more attached to the on-going characters. I look forward to reading the next two books in the Advocate series, which I have just downloaded in E-book format.

4.0 out of 5 stars great legal thriller August 2, 2009
Format:Paperback
Juvenile Court attorney Sabre Brown is contented with her life especially her work protecting children from people who might harm them. The only negative in her life is her brother Ron who remains missing having disappeared without a trace. Currently, she is working a case involving ten year old Alexis Murdock and two years old Jamie Smith; both are staying at the Jordon Receiving Home while the police investigate their respective parent Gaylord Murdock and his battered pregnant girlfriend Peggy Smith. Peggy initially blames Gaylord for hitting her, but quickly changes her tune when she realizes she will have to press charges.

Gaylord obeys court orders determined to prove he is a fit father so he can regain custody of Alexis. When Sabre talks with Alexis, the frightened tweener asks if she must go home. That question leaves Sabre wondering if Murdock is the upright citizen he claims to be. Someone is also harassing Sabre. Calls with no voice on the other end at any time night or day; items in her home are misplaced or lost; and a bat was tossed into her office through the mail slot. Finally she finds a lizard in her bed with all her doors and windows shut. Sabra discovers Peggy has a daughter Honey who has goes missing yet no police report is filed. She fears what happened to Honey will happen to Alexis and Jamie once they go home, but the law is on the side of Gaylord, so far.

Readers will admire dedicated Sabre, a strong advocate of protecting the young as she deals with adult predators to prevent them from abusing children. Not always easy as the law can be on the side of the beast; still she goes the extra kilometers to try keeping the kids safe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, lots of twists! March 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
It was a great story, and had plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. The viewpoint changed often, too, which helped keep my interest. Occasionally, there was a coincidence or small plot hole that was a bit stretched, but overall it was good.

I also liked the fact that the author refrained from throwing in some contrived romance, but instead concentrated on the story.

The writing style was a bit flat, but with more practice, I'm sure the author will improve.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't do it February 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Primary character is a female lawyer, who seems confused by her role; no boundaries with child clients, interviewing of children was way off base, inappropriate and self-serving descriptions of court processes related to child victims of maltreatment and outcomes. This is certainly not to imply sexually inappropriate content or suggestion. The liberties taken with the role of an attorney in this system are misleading and unfortunate. Probably best to leave psychological material and interventions to those who actually do that for a living! Realizing this is a work of fiction, one is left to wonder how many lay people could read this and relate this fantasy to reality. One simply doesn't set children up this way. Great opportunity to address this population was totally missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps You Guessing March 26, 2013
Format:Paperback
My husband got this book for me at a book fair where he met the author. I am sorry I wasn't able to meet her myself. I really enjoyed reading the first book and am well into the second one. The first book kept my attention and kept me wondering what would happen next. The characters were well developed as well as the story line. I am exicted to read the rest of this series. I read mostly mysteries and these books rank up there with some of the best. I hope Ms. Burrell continues to write her wonderful stories!
