Book Description

February 5, 2012
Think you'd do anything for your child? Meet Mimi Acker, a mother who will take on any crusade, whether or not her child actually wants her to. Is Mimi her unusual daughter's best advocate or her heaviest albatross? This new short story from award-winning author Matt Debenham (THE BOOK OF RIGHT AND WRONG) was a finalist in Narrative Magazine's Fall 2011 Story Contest.

Matt Debenham is also the author of THE BOOK OF RIGHT AND WRONG, winner of the 2009 Ohio State University Press Prize for Fiction. His stories have appeared in such publications as Roanoke Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, The Pinch, The Battered Suitcase, and others. THE BOOK OF RIGHT AND WRONG was endorsed by Slate.com, called "a brilliant debut" by Huffington Post Books, and was praised by such writers as Amy Greene, Paul Lisicky, Pam Houston, and Paul F. Tompkins. Matt Debenham blogs about writing (and writing advice) at mattdebenham.com.

If you're craving a single serving of short story magic, savage your couch for the pocket change it costs to pick up this brand new short story by Matt Debenham, author of THE BOOK OF RIGHT AND WRONG. This story doesn't appear in his award-winning collection and is like a perfect B-side to his other collections of characters with their humor, their voice, and their flaws.

THE ADVOCATE isn't one of those bleak tales from the angst-hearted 20-something set, but a completely human and engaging story in the tradition of Amy Bloom, Lorrie Moore, and Dan Chaon. Throw it on the Kindle and take it to a cafe. Spend ten dimes and a part of an afternoon with one of the emerging virtuosos of modern fiction.

The Advocate is a comforting, honest glimpse into the hysteria of being a parent. Matt Debenham understands that a child is as complex as an adult, and his character Alix has become both. While any parent can relate to Mimi, the matriarch and protagonist, it is watching a cluster of people try to support Alix that makes this such a good short story.

If you enjoy this piece, you'll love Debenham's short story collection The Book of Right and Wrong, or the personal blog he keeps about the writing process.

Without giving too much away, this is a story about motherhood, and about childhood, and about the awkward moments between. It takes you on a journey through quite a wide variety of difficult and complicated interpersonal issues with humor and alarming clarity of observation. Matt Debenham is a wonderful writer.
