Book Description

Are you going to the Alamo? Read this book first, then take it with you to see and remember it all. Most visitors just see the Alamo compound, where it ended, but the 1836 siege and battle took place all over the city.
The Alamo Story and Battleground Tour is the first Alamo history book that tells the story at the places throughout San Antonio where Alamo events actually happened. This book combines an Alamo history from 1685 to 1836 with a self-guided tour. The places on the tour may be experienced through the pictures in the book or by following the maps and directions the book provides and actually walking the ground where the Alamo heroes walked.
Covering a distance of about two miles, much of it along the San Antonio River Walk, the written history and self-guided tour take you to the locations of: Davy Crockett’s ashes, Jim Bowie’s river palace, General Santa Anna’s death flag, the Cos surrender house, La Villita, the forbidden footbridge, the Old Mill Ford, Jim Bowie’s wedding in 1831, and many others.

My biggest problem is that only one map contains the "letter keys" that matches locations on the map. The rest of the maps only marks a location with a letter. So I had to keep turning back to key map which is a real pain. It would have been much better if every map had such a location key. That wouldn't be to hard to do and it sure would help!
First of all buy from Amazon rather than other vendors! You'll save a bunch of $s. Although I'm very familiar with most of the locations mentioned I found a few that I knew had existed at one time like Bowie's home. Now I know where it is as well a few others. It takes the visitor on a helpful stroll around the area of the Alamo and points out places of importance that are no longer there. One word of warning don't take the tour during the late spring, summer, or early fall months it's too hot and humid to enjoy yourself. If you do go in the mentioned months you might want to spread out the tour over a few days, And please take plenty of H2O with you you'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the deep history our state has January 1, 2015

Being born and raised in Texas, I love the deep history our state has. I have been to the Alamo once and want to revisit it again - especially after reading this book. It is a field guide and helps one understand the events leading up to the fall of the Alamo and the documented areas around the vicinity that has great importance to the battle. I first learned about this book on an episode of Texas Country Reporter. I highly recommend getting this book and bring it with you when going to the Alamo for a more complete tour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic understanding of the Alamo battleground. January 25, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good book for the basic knowledge for the layout of the battlefield. I was looking forward in reading the book. After reading this book, I was disappointed that the book did not give more detail about the battle while doing the walking tour.
Example: While at the place where the front gate was, it would have been interesting to have point out from the gate entrance the Alamo Shire (Alamo itself) there was a wood stick thatching walling and this was the place that David Crockett and his men where during the battle.

I would think if this book would have a great book with a little more details, so you could get a real understanding of the battle field, like where the canons where place while doing the walking of the walls to where the Alamo defenders where during the battle, too where the Mexican army’s did their attacked on the Alamo.
I am no historian, but the Phil Collins Alamo Museum gave me more of an understanding the battle within the Alamo compound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the app? March 4, 2015
By Louie
Format:Kindle Edition
This would be so much better if it came with an app for a mobile device. I purchased the book in Kindle format, but all the while using it as a guide, I can think of many more ways a GPS-enabled app would have been so much better , especially if it contained narration and additional information exclusive to the app.

To take it a step further, if the app were able to use 3D/GPS technology, you could hold up the device and see how the grounds looked at the time of the battle. What an experience that would be!

I am a native Texan and have visited the Alamo many times, having the privilege of living only 80 miles west of San Antonio.
