From the Publisher

Here is a unique look at the locations and history of 200 Irish Families. Two hundred name maps are included, showing the locations of each family in Ireland. It is a pioneering work in the field of surname mapping, and the first work of its kind ever to appear on Irish Families.

More About the Author

I was born in Lancashire, England, in 1943. My paternal grandfather was born in Knock, Co. Mayo and my maternal grandmother in Camlough, Co. Armagh. I am English on my mother's side. I read Geography and Economics at the University of Liverpool. I started working life in town and country planning in Liverpool and Warrington. I then worked in development planning with Asda. I was in practice on my own account from 1982. I published a number of articles on planning, including a chapter in a John Wiley textbook for students in the UK and North America. Later I published amateur articles on subjects of Irish interest in the magazine of the Ulster Historical Foundation, Belfast, Northern Ireland; Irish Families Monthly, Kansas City, Mo, USA; and not least Glór Achadh Mór, Co. Mayo, Ireland. I have used several different variant spellings of my surname, whichever seemed appropriate at the time. Some of these articles I have reproduced on Scribd. See Scribd Edward Neafcy Pictishfort.

This book combines the classical Irish Surnames of MacLysagh and Wolfe with modern mapping techniques to produce a practical guide for anyone interested in Irish Genealogy. It makes use of the the 1992 phone directory and postal codes to display a modern day map of over 200 Irish surnames. I would like to see the next version incorporate older data sets such as the full 1901 or 1911 census or partial 1841 or 1891 census.

The title suggested to me that my common Irish surname would be found inside, but alas it was not. I asked Amazon for a return authorization but they simply credited my account and told me to keep or give away the book which I plan to do.

I could've gotten it from a site without the graphs inside, but purchased it instead. It does serve it's purpose and will be used when I get to the Irish side of the family genealogy.

I have lent this book out so often I wonder if it is mine when I see it!
Of interest to Irish and Scottish ancestry I would say. Accurate as far as I can tell!
Arrived in good time and excellent condition!
No faulting it for what it is!
