The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Evil never sleeps. Embrace your power and protect your playground.

What started out as the search for a killer very quickly becomes something so much more. In a unique story set alongside the events of the second film, Spider-Man discovers he's not the only one tracking down Manhattan's criminals. The underworld has been turned upside down with a one-man campaign of violence and murder that has captured the city in an iron grip of fear. Villains from the film as well as fan-favorite, classic Marvel characters are woven together in a twisted web of adrenaline-fueled, free-roaming, web-slinging action that puts players on a collision course with an evil far beyond Spider-Man's reckoning.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre effort at best! April 30, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Verified Purchase
This is a retread of the first Amazing Spider-Man game with extremely minor improvements.

The biggest improvement is the web mechanics, which requires you to be near objects (such as buildings) in order to swing from them. Not sure why this wasn't implemented in the first ASM game, as the 2004 PS2 Spider-Man 2 game had this exact same mechanic, but at least they finally shoehorned it in for ASM 2.

And while it may be the biggest improvement, it's also the biggest cause for frustration. While the controls for Spidey should be fluid, smooth and exhilarating, somehow it was all confusing, mechanical and awkward. Maneuvering across the map is a feat of immeasurable irritation. You will grow sick of it. And fast! Often I couldn't wait to just reach my destination on the map, because swinging was too much of a chore - especially when time was of the essence!

And speaking of the map! I actually checked my game cover one time while playing to ensure I wasn't playing an old PS2 game, because the graphics were well below subpar for what we all know the PS3 can produce - If you've ever played GTA, you understand what a true free roam world can be like. But in ASM 2, the textures and lighting effects are pure grade-A garbage I'd expect from a 1998 DeVry University commercial. It's not just the crummy graphics that make the experience so incredibly bad, I also found myself in awe at how craptastic some of the animations were, especially choppy animations from background characters, or cars that appeared to turn corners with as much considerable physics as a Southpark cartoon car might. I didn't expect a GTA quality environment, but ASM 2's free roam world isn't even close! There's no love or care that went into the making of this game at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good May 6, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Verified Purchase
I was extremely excited about this game when I watched the developer walkthrough back in early March and learned that the webslinging system would be completely revamped, so I pre-ordered it. When I got this game I was immediately impressed with the webslinging, it was immersing and felt really well done. Overall combat flow and gameplay runs smoothly and is honestly quite fun. The feature where you have the option to stop crimes, while fun at first, quickly grows tiresome, because if you don't stop as many crimes as you possibly can, your "hero" status very rapidly drops to "menace" and the police will be after you, which is a real pain. Despite the repetitive crimes, I took great delight in being able to thwart car chases and leap into burning buildings to save people, and both activities bump your status up a great deal upon completion. However, the story kind of follows the traditional "movie game" formula in that I felt like it was trying to do too much all at the same time; to me, they tried to squeeze as many of the iconic villains into the game as they possibly could, and each of these characters felt underdeveloped and two dimensional as a result. Overall, I think that the smooth gameplay and new abilities and features makes up for the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Mediocre Spider-Man 2 May 8, 2014

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
If you ever hear anyone say how much they love the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Game, you can be sure they're saying they love the amazing "Spider-Man 2" game and not "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" game. Confusing? Let's go back in history for a bit.

The Sony Playstation was blessed with two incredibly fun Spider-Man games. They were some of the best superhero games on a console, and they were pretty popular. The Playstation 2 got, in time for the release of the first Spider-Man film a game that was basically a visually upgraded version of those two. It played the same, it just looked better. Then Spider-Man 2, the film, was released, and a game came alongside it for the three major consoles. While the film was making history as one of the greatest superhero movies, the game was doing the same for superhero games. It was just the right combination of every good idea a Spider-Man game ever had, and practically none of the bad ones.

The major differences between that game and all the previous ones were that the game was open world, so you could travel around the city all you wanted, and that web-swinging was impossibly fun. For the first time in a Spider-Man game, swinging was realistic, as it had your webs attaching to buildings, and the physics engine did the rest. Most Spider-Man games after that one had used the same formula, with varying degrees of success, but to this day, Spider-Man 2 is still the game all other Spider-Man games are measured against.

With the release of the Amazing Spider-Man film, Beenox (who have made the last Spider-Man games, which were not open world) released a game based on it (technically, it was a sequel). I have not played that game, but I know two things about it: it is open world, and it doesn't have realistic web swinging.

Bet you thought I was gonna say this game. You want a true open world game play Spider-Man Web of Shawdows. Hasn't been a game like this one since! Wish the developers would of stuck with this formula of game but I guess they figured let see if we can make you waste your money on other crap Spider-man games! Just my thoughts Bring back more Web of Shawdows!
