Book Description

January 1, 2000

Throughout The American We Deserve, Donald Trump points out problems and offers sensible, practical solutions. To help him formulate his ideas into well-researched and workable policies, Donald Trump has secured the support and counsel of a group of domestic and foreign policy advisers, all with White House or senior policy experience.

In The American We Deserve, Donald Trump lays out his concerns and solutions, virtually a platform on the major political issues facing our country. But this is not a dry, public-policy book. This is Donald Trump taking on the issues in his no-nonsense, unvarnished manner, offering populist, provocative, and sometimes dramatic solutions that no other politician would dare to put forward.

In three best-selling books, Donald Trump used stories of his deal-making and his dazzling life to captivate readers with his version of just how far you can go if you dream the American Dream. In The American We Deserve, Trump takes all that he has learned from his successes, his failures, and his extraordinary comeback and uses those lessons to build a vision of what needs to be done to ensure that the American Dream he dreamed continues to be a possibility for everyone.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Donald Trump doesn't pull any punches when he surveys the American political scene: Pat Buchanan's "totally lost it," Al Gore is "an able, underrated man who seems confused," and Bill Bradley is simply a "disaster." But the real estate tycoon has some ideas of his own about how the United States should be run, and he shares them with the potential electorate for the 2000 presidential race in The America We Deserve. There aren't too many surprises here: Trump lambastes the government bureaucracy that's made a mess of the civic infrastructure, particularly the public school systems; he supports creating opportunities for business developers (both large and small); and he's tougher than tough on crime. He's also prepared to come down hard on America's enemies abroad, such as China, North Korea, and Cuba. Among the more interesting aspects of his platform is his desire to do away completely with soft money in campaign financing and allow unlimited personal contributions--along with full disclosure of political contributions, updated daily on the Internet.

The America We Deserve is an effective combination of Trump's straight-shooting personality and policy-wonk data points. As another American presidential campaign heats up, Trump raises issues that will force voters to give serious consideration to what they want in a candidate. --Ron Hogan

Whether you love or hate Donald Trump, this book is light-years ahead of what current Presidential hopefuls are passing off as their "vision".

This book keeps celebrity name-dropping to a minimum (a weakness of other Trump books), and has specific, well-thought and referenced ideas on economics, trade, foreign policy, education, and crime. The tone and style of the book is in in the Trump mode: refreshingly brash and straightforward.

Forget the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" public persona, get the book, and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars DONALD TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT January 20, 2000
Format:Hardcover
I am not an American citizen but, I have always been interested in why some people succeed and what they have done to be successful. Well, in reading Donald Trump's book I came away with a clear understanding (I have read his other boks as well)why Mr. Trump is a very successful man. First, he is a take charge guy. When there are problems he meets them head on. The impression you get in reading his book is that of a man who dosn't like problems to fester. He likes to solve things right away in the most efficient manner possible. Moreover, he is a realist, which is to mean that he faces facts. This can be seen in his chapters on The Safe Streets We Deserve, The Foreign Policy We Deserve, and Freedom From Terrorism. He tells things exaclty the way they are. Another characteristic of Donald Trump although this may seem obvious is that this is a very serious man. He cares about his country. He is a very results oriented person who wants to succeed. You can see this throughout the whole book. Personally, I found the book very interesting, reading it more from the point of view of analyzing his personality. I've come away concluding that this is one very tough man, who is very smart, no-nonsense, with the attitude of "lets get down to business and do what has to be done." And to top it all off, he knows people. He seems to have the instict or talent to hire the right people around him. A very important trait for any successful person to have. It seems to me, he would make quite a President.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Trump prose mixed with logic and wit November 15, 2003
Format:Hardcover
It's about time a guy like Donald Trump published this book. Whether you love him, hate him, or want him to fix his hair, The Donald presents fresh takes on age-old arguments and explains why he has what it takes.

While every other candidate in 2000 was writing books about their youths, military service, or whatever else, Trump uses his get-down-to-business style to attack issues (and people) and offer quick-witted solutions. The fact that I disagree on a few points does not take away from the quality of the book. If you want a straight-shooting tome from a guy who takes care of things himself, The America We Deserve is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book that Deserves to be Read January 21, 2000
Format:Hardcover
The America We Deserve is one of the few truly honest and straight forward books written by a candidate for public office. Donald Trump explains his views on almost every topic from Capital Punishment to the Economy in a down-to-earth fashion that makes the reader feel that they are being talked to directly by Trump himself. Trump's book is also witty in some spots, and a couple of times the book had me rolling on the floor laughing.

But Trump takes a serious tone when he talks about what is wrong with America. He also doesn't hold back on how much he dislikes Bill Bradley and Pat Buchanan. Trump praises Rudy Giuliani for his tremendous efforts in changing New York City. Oprah Winfrey, Trump's first choice for Vice President, is also applauded for getting millions of Americans to read. All in all, Donald Trump writes an excellent book about what he would do as President. And if Trump truly believes in giving the American Dream to every citizen, he will make a great Chief Executive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trump's views on politics August 26, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Trump is the kind of person that doesn't wait around, but fixes problem when they happen. Unfortunately, governments tend to procrastinate until something tragic happens, and then they are forced to change something, hopefully for better. In this book, you learn Trump's political views. He expresses his beliefs on economics, trade, education, crime, terrorism, and foreign policy.

At first, I had no idea what to expect of him, but he really surprised me. He knows what he is talking about. For example, he thinks that our country should be run by a business CEO. While our country is not-for-profit organization, it could definitely use better cost discipline to keep the books in balance. I think if some of his ideas were applied, they would reduce crime and provide more opportunities to a greater number of people, not just the ones at the top.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you care anything about politics, read this book! January 20, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Donald Trump offers more with this book than any other book by a would-be president I have read. His plans for this country are down-to-earth. They make sense. Anyone thinking about running for president or any other national office should read this book. Also, it is written in such a way that you forget you're reading about politics. It is smart and funny and very charming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trump should stick to business not politics! January 9, 2000
Format:Hardcover
In a year when people like Warren Beatty want to run for president, Pat Buchanan has switched parties and Jesse Ventura has become the talk of politics, it is no coincidence that Donald Trump has written this book.

The America We Deserve is Trump's attempt to show that he has what it takes to make the "American Dream" become the White House battle cry. The problem is, with no political background his arguments are weak.

Trump is using an out of control political system to play upon the political ignorance of the American people in order to gain enough popularity to win the highest office in the land.

While the book is well written and Trump does make serious points about his ambitions, he fails to be convincing that he has what it takes. Overall it was a pleasant read, but Trump needs to stick to books about business and leave politics to the experts.
