"There are a lot of bad republicans; there are no good democrats."—Ann Coulter

In today’s climate of hyper-partisanship, blurred lines between political news, analysis, and entertainment, and outrageous comments from the chattering classes, who better than Tom Patterson to provide students with the tools and context to make informed judgments and become skilled political thinkers? Patterson’s The American Democracy has long been a best seller for American government courses due to its insightful, readable, and balanced portrayal of the American political system. The 10th edition continues this tradition of excellence while also introducing a new emphasis on political thinking at a time when the partisan divide seemingly could not be wider and unbiased political information is often drowned out by other sources.

With expertise in the areas of public opinion, the media, and elections among other areas, Tom Patterson is a voice you can trust to help develop your students critical thinking skills when it comes to politics and political science. As Patterson notes, “Political thinking takes place within the context of a person’s political interests and values, which can lead equally thoughtful individuals to reach opposing opinions on the same issue.” If you are looking for learning materials to help ensure your students leave your course among those “thoughtful individuals” that will carry the debate forward in measured and informed ways, The American Democracy is the right choice for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above average for a college Government class June 26, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I ordered the used version which was approximately $50 cheaper than the new version and the physical quality of the book was pretty good. Not bad for a used book. No page was torn and it wasn't written on.

The material of the book itself was good. That's a relative statement, of course, but for an introductory course on Government it wasn't bad. The chapters and sections were organized well, the difficulty of reading was relatively easy (no use high vocabulary or complex syntax), and chapter summaries at the end of the chapters proved to be useful in recapping major points after reading chapter. Chapter lengths vary, but it's usually 20-30 pages. For me, it took about 30-50 mins to read each chapter. However, if you have to take tests/quizzes and you're feeling lazy/out of time, you may be able to get by with just skimming the chapter lightly.

I believe the professor is allowed access to online material that goes along with the book and he uploaded it to my class via Black Board. Aids such as study guides, flash cards, and vocabulary lists helped with each chapter.

Now the bias of the book was downplayed. Honestly, it seemed to lean more conservative but both sides of the argument are given by both parties. In each chapter, there is an issue presented and the book presents a Republican view and a Democrat view. The book doesn't particularly sway one way, but rather gives you all the viewpoints available in order for you, the individual, to make the decision.

Physical quality: 4/5. (higher number = better condition)

Difficulty of reading: 0/5. (higher number = harder read)

Interest of read: 3/5. (higher number = more interest)

Organization: 4/5 (higher number = better organized)
