Review

"In The American Ideology, Brian Vanyo pinpoints the fundamental values that made the United States the greatest nation in the history of the world. Anyone who cares about the future of America must read this book." -- Rick Santorum, former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate

"Brian Vanyo's The American Ideology is without a doubt one of the most authoritative books yet written on the greatness of America and the internal risks to sustained self-government. I commend this book to every lover of liberty."--Mike Lee, U.S. Senator (Utah) and former constitutional lawyer

"We all have a moral obligation as citizens to know and understand the fundamentals of government that our Fore Fathers meant for this country - without bias. The American Ideology is a brilliant, insightful, and informative means to that end."--Dr. Laura Schlessinger, host of The Dr. Laura Program, commentator, and author

"Brian comes from a family committed to service and to America. His affection for this great country is clear."--John Hoeven, U.S. Senator (North Dakota), former Governor of North Dakota

"The American Ideology is a straightforward presentation of the facts surrounding the development of our constitution, our government, and our society. Brian Vanyo presents the political philosophy of our founders in their words--using their writings, speeches, and letters--to identify the direction they set for our country. This in-depth civics lesson is a must read for those who seek the promise of liberty and freedom in the United States of America." -- Ed Schafer, former North Dakota Governor and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

This book is both educational and thought provoking. It educates the reader by re-familiarizing themselves to earlier classroom days of history and government while causing us all to ponder how far we have strayed from the original intent of our forefathers in the writing of the Constitution. The author challenges each of us to analyze the direction taken since then to determine whether we have given up our rights of government "by the people". He provides a convincing amount of evidence to support the belief that we have, indeed, given up far to many of our liberties.

The author begins by outlining the simplest and purest source for all governance - that of Natural Law - God's Law. We are all endowed with individual rights which no person or government can take from us. The constitution was framed with this in mind and fully embraced the notion that liberty was and is best preserved when government remains less rather than more intrusive.

Next, the author re-educates us all with regard to the three branches of government and shows us how throughout history each branch has exercised more authority than the constitution intended. But, the beauty of our forefather's wisdom is that, to an extent, these breaches of authority can and should be corrected by our ability to elect leaders who will make adjustments to keep the Constitution as the source of our governance. The author points out clearly that the danger in allowing the federal government to take more and more of the power given to its' citizens by the Constitution is that we then become more and more reliant on the government to decide what is best for us. We succumb to what the forefathers predicted; that "it is human nature to allow ourselves to move toward monarchy".

I have just finished reading Brian Vanyo's The American Ideology: Taking back our Country with the Philosophy of our Founding Fathers. In the interest of full disclosure, I will state that the author is my cousin, and our similar upbringing certainly provided a shared foundation on many moral and political points. That said, I will provide as objective a review as possible, though I admit I am predisposed to those conclusions espoused in the book.

The work, overall, is an incredible synthesis of over two-hundred years of political and legal history. That the author is well-read, and the book is well-researched is beyond doubt, regardless of whether or not you agree with his conclusions. What's more, it is written in such a manner as to obscure many of the author's sensibilities in favor of those words articulated directly by the Founding Fathers, as well as subsequent Presidents, elected officials, courts and statesmen. The reader is left with the impression that they are engaged in a reasoned discussion not only with the author, but with the historical figures whose actions provided the framework of our American history.

If I have one criticism, it is that this book is not going to be easily accessible. The vocabulary, along with the density of the subject matter itself, places the book as most suitable for a scholarly setting (in an advanced history or legal classroom, for example). This is not a High School Civics lesson.

Forging through the difficult first chapters, however, is well worth the effort.

This book should be REQUIRED reading in ALL schools instead of the lies our children are being taught. Get back to the US Constitution or watch America crumble right before your very eyes. WE are responsible for the downfall of our country. We should be ASHAMED!

Vanyo's tour de force is a must read for all who respect the Constitution. Although other authors (Woods/Gutzman, Levin, Greve, to name a few) have dealt with bits and pieces of this issue, no one has brought it together in one book as well as Vanyo. It is amazing to see how quickly the well-crafted plan of 1787 began to unravel when placed in the care of those with their own agendas. From Hamilton's National Bank, to Adam's Sedition Act, to Marshall's Marbury, to FDR's Court-packing threat, to Obama's ACA; those with their own agendas have chipped away at the Founder's carefully balanced plan of government until what is left today would be unrecognizable to the likes of George Mason, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Although the bulk of the book (Chapter 4) is devoted to showing us the effects of key constitutional decisions (and affronts), its greatest value is found in Chapter's One (On Natural Law) and Three (On American Mores). Here we see the reason America is in such trouble today; we have cast off our ideological and moral moorings. John Adams famously said that our Constitution "was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." If Adams was right (and I think he was) this statement more than any other explains why the Constitution in force today is a mere shell of its former self. As another reviewer has pointed out, the book is written above high school-level; but we must find some way of getting its lessons into our secondary curriculum - before it is too late!
