I loved watching his haunt go up and his family helping out.

Again, the filmmakers did a fine job with the film, and of providing us with a window into obsession and its negative effects on everyone involved.
Dr. Daniel W Socall
Victor and his family show that there are still good people out there striving for their dreams and making them come true.

I am a home haunter of the type featured in this documentary, and as such, I enjoyed being swept up in a wave of "Gee whiz, Someone Out There created a documentary about Us! Woo hoo!" If you are also a home haunter, then please skip the rest of this review and rent the movie immediately.

Most other viewers will probably find watching to be a worthwhile experience, although odds are it will feel familiar even to those whose idea of Halloween decorating consists of setting out a pumpkin on the porch. Nothing you see here will challenge your expectations, and the film suffers from a narrow focus that strips away most of the richness and unexpected delights provided by this quirky hobby.

The framework is wearily familiar: male head of household overcompensating for an emotional challenge is crazily overinvolved with his passion and is supported by his long-suffering spouse and kids who sacrifice to 'stand by their man.' Members of almost any hobby can be found who fit neatly into this pattern and produce an end result that is accurate, as far as it goes. Fortunately the documentarians don't treat their subjects as freaks, thereby avoiding a common and offensive pitfall to this approach.

Diversity is a major casualty. Where are the female haunters? Despite being too common to be noteworthy in the hobby, they're nowhere to be seen in this film (unless one counts those supportive wives and daughters). Haunters from racial minorities? Again, invisible. Displays that are intended to be light-hearted or friendly or otherwise unexpected? You got it - even creative diversity is glossed over. Finding haunters and haunts that aren't what people expect isn't difficult, so why were they omitted?

All except for one guy in the film, I really, really enjoyed it. There is one guy who just takes the fun out of Halloween, and you will see what I mean if you rent this. Its ok to love Halloween, I love it and keep some of my indoor Halloween props up all year in m y house lol. But the guy Victor in this film looks at Halloween the wrong way in my opinion. He takes it to serious, and takes all the fun out if it. If I re watch this and Im sure I will lol I will honestly skip past all the parts that he is in, because he just takes the fun out of the film.

Other then that the other guys in this are GREAT !!!!! they are down to earth, and just a lot of fun to watch them setup their Halloween displays. So if you love Halloween, and you are a home haunter, I know you will enjoy this. I wish it was out on dvd to buy.

So except for the one guy in it, its awesome. Would of gave it 5 stars, had to give 4 because of him. But its worth watching for sure.

Not the "extreme Halloween' type of film I expected, but so much more. A profile of real people motivated by a passion for a real American holiday.

I am a huge Halloween enthusiast. As a teen I used to do a garage haunt for family and friends. As an adult, I act at a local professional haunted attraction and have seen first hand how much work goes into putting a haunted house together. We work year round. Building sets and props. Creating storylines and characters. Costumes and masks. Jumping through hoops to satisfy the Fire Marshall. It's truly blood, sweat, and tears. And we do this all on a volunteer basis. We do it for the love of it. Crazy, I know. But what a rush when you hear those first screams.
So, with all this knowledge in mind, I bought this documentary not really knowing what to expect. Maybe a how to home haunt? My biggest concern was that this movie would be making fun of home haunters and enthusiasts. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was blown away. This documentary follows three(four) home haunters who do it for the love of it. While each one has a different level of commitment, they all do it just for the love of it. I was moved by this Documentary more then I thought I would be. I laughed. I did face palms. I nodded in agreement. My eyes even puddled up. It's entertaining, even for those that are not into this. It's emotional and even a little heartbreaking. I thought they did an excellent job showing all the work behind the screams. So many people have no idea of all that is involved.
Someone commented that they felt Victor was too serious about it. Not true. He's THAT dedicated. Half way through the movie (watched it with my fellow haunt owners) we were all nodding our heads in agreement with Victor and saying "This guy has the right idea. He gets what it's about. He's already thinking like a professional. He NEEDS to go pro". I loved watching his haunt go up and his family helping out.

"The American Scream" follows three Massachusetts family's who go above and beyond to decorate their homes for Halloween. Each family is unique in their own way, and their love for All Hallows Eve shines in this delightful documentary. If you are a fan of Halloween, you'll enjoy this little slice of small town Americana, as the events that unfold are both hilarious and heartwarming.
