Editorial Reviews

Review

"Students need to hit the ground running - this chapter (Chapter 3) has a positive blend of material that does just that! The coverage is well-balanced! This chapter serves as a "kick-off" to the remaining components of the system."

"This text is a true leader in the industry! It is updated, current, well organized and thought through!"

"…clearly promotes 'critical understanding' with the Close-Ups, New Directions, Doing Your Part, A Question of Ethics, What Americans Think, and landmark Comparative Perspectives!"

"In terms of organization, the text is well thought through! The chapter selection is state-of-the-art from start to finish!"

"The material is clear, accurate, interesting, on the appropriate level and most important, 'on the cutting edge' of the text's three major themes: 1. Criminal justice involves public policies 2. The concept of social system is an essential tool and 3. American values provide the foundation on which criminal justice is based." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"Must-have" if you're interested in law or law school bound...Superb reference and learning book (there is also a Study Guide -- harder to find); you'll keep this book for years of use! If you take a Criminal Justice course, this is the text you should hope the prof demands. It is truly the best out there. Yes, it's pricy - but worth every dollar.

As an instructor of criminal justice, I can say that this is one of the easiest and most user-friendly textbooks on the market. It's colorful and friendly to the eye, not simply boring text. Introductory text content is fairly uniform across the textbook market, but presentation is everything and can mean the difference between a bored student and a student eager to learn. There is a reason this book has so many editions. Pick up a copy and find out why.

This book provided a pretty good overview of the system. I thought it was a fine read and not too boring. It has a liberal political slant/agenda which I thought took away from the book but what can you do?

I ordered this book from amazon. It was used but for the price I paid $18 compared to brand new at around $200 it was definitely worth it. The spine was a little worn, but that is to be expected.
