Relying on simple economic inquiry and primary source data, Lebergott's The Americans narrates the history of American society. WIth a depth of coverage unmatched by other texts at the introductory level, Lebergott explores the history of people, techniques, and inventions - from the growth of ports along the Eastern seaboard to recent disputes over federal regulations. Where cliometric work and traditional history often agree, Lebergott raises new questions through straightforward economic analysis and primary source data. He focuses on issues central to U.S. development and the choices involved during times of critical economic, political, and sciological change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lebergott Writes Outstanding Economic History January 1, 2008

The Americans: An Economic Record
This is one of the best, most readible economic histories of the United States that I have read. Each page has some nugget that bears repeating. You will compare level of living, look at fantastic tables (THERE ARE MORE THAN 100). You can study transportation, land use, wages, new technology. This book is a winner. Read it.
