About the Author

If the U.S. were to boast one great independent film director, he would be John Sayles, a cult figure among his admirers. Nominated for both an Academy Award for scriptwriting and a National Book Award, Sayles has written screenplays, teleplays, short stories, and novels and has worked as a script doctor for a virtual who's who of Hollywood film and television talent.

John Sayles has an enviable gift, he can remember rich dialogue and recreate it in a story. He loves regular people, the Latina cleaning woman, the white mid-western truck driver, the aging New York anarchist, the young Boston woman who bowls with the other girls to enjoy a little life away from a life without prospects. You can hear the varied accents and the timber.

His characters are so vibrant because they speak with their own voice - rich, unique and often from different cultures. So many writers use different characters that sound alike - because they are just speaking for the writer. Not Sayles. If you appreciate people in the real world, this collection of short stories is a gift. If you are an aspiring writer of characters and dialogue, Sayles is the master. Learn and enjoy.

Please fix the Amazon listing to put the apostrophe in the right place. As you can see on the book cover, it is plural possessive (Anarchists' Convention), not singular.

I remember hearing the title story read on "Selected Shorts" -- it is hilarious.
