... or more accurately the depiction of love through out history and the view on love by leading psychoanalysts.
Large portions of the book is an attempt to write the book Freud never got around to, but references many times in letters.
The book starts of with the first known depictions of love in pre-industrial society, through and ending with love in Shakespeare's time. It then covers all the post-Freud analysts who discussed love (including neo-Freduians and his detractor) and ending with a sketch of Freud's unfinished opus on love.

The books is dense and takes no short-cuts, but is easy to read if you are familiar with psychoanalytical works.
Most people will remember Bergmann as Prof. Louis Levy in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors.

If you're in love, or have been, this is a great work than manages to capture the essence of love while remaining a good analytical distance.
