Like all of the "Dummy" books,"The Ancient Egyptians for Dummies" is full of good information, interesting, easy to read, entertaining and a very good start for anyone interested in learning about the oldest culture on Earth. I bought the book because of an up-coming trip to Egypt. After finishing the book I bought several others, borrowed several more from the local library and will continue to read about this ancient civilization until I return from Cairo. The author, Charlotte Booth, has a Masters Degree in Egyptian Archaeology from University College London and, when writing this book, was working on her PHD in the same subject. She writes with intelligence, humor and provides good information that keeps the reader's interest. Best of all she wets the readers interest in the subject so it is almost impossible not to seek further detailed information. It would have been an impossible task for Ms. Booth to provide everything in one book about this subject. For example, the Pyramids were a thousand years old when Tutankhamun sat on the throne of Egypt. And Tutankhamun had been in his famous tomb, wearing his beautiful golden mask, a thousand years when Cleopatra was queen. But Ms. Booth's book covers much of this history and best off all, her book is a good place to start gathering information about long history of Egypt.

I'm a casual history buff and this book is perfect for learning your way around ancient Egyptian history. It reads smoothly and quickly and is an excellent resource for those casually interested in the topic, like myself, or those who want a firm introduction to more detailed texts on ancient Egypt. Love it.

I also highly recommend "The Ancient Greeks for Dummies." I actually used it to teach a high-school humanities class on mythology. The kids loved it.

As a former member of "Team Idiot's Guide" I bought this book once with two other Dummies books - Medieval History and Native American History, as they weren't available in Idiot's form and/or had bad reviews. I began with Native American History, and it was interesting, but quite frankly, it was riddled with grammatical errors that really took away from the value of the text. It was a little dry too, and I worried that perhaps I made a bad choice with these books. However, I finished it and cracked open Ancient Egyptians for Dummies. It might be important to note that I've been reading books and visiting museums about ancient Egypt since I was very, very young.
It was like discovering the tomb of King Tut. This book is absolutely brilliant. It throws in military history, religion, lifestyle, and humor. The author was very lively and made the reading very interesting. Plus, she makes the world of the ancient Egyptians almost tangible - as if you could just step in and join them. She points out their strengths, and their weaknesses. Ms. Booth brought back my love for Egypt, and I am very thankful for that.
However, this book really is for anyone, and the Cheat Sheet included is really helpful to reference places. If you're looking for a book on Egypt, or have even the slightest interest in Egypt, buy this book first. You won't regret it, I promise.

This book has no less than 10 references to a handy Cheat Sheet (map of Egypt, dynasty dates, Greek/Egyptian nomenclature, modern locations, etc.) which make for easier understanding. Well, guess what? The Kindle version of this book not only doesn't provide a hot link to the Cheat Sheet in the text, it HAS NO CHEAT SHEET! Given how heavily the author relies on this item to provide essential facts, its omission is a severe flaw in the Kindle version.

I am intrigued by Egyptian history and my son is obsessed. I wanted to learn more so we could discuss beyond what I have picked up on the Discovery Channel. I found this Dummies guide the book I needed to get me there. History reading can, and usually is, a chore to read but I did not have this problem with this book.

Typically, I love the "Dummies" books. In order to get the most out of this, you really have to read the entire thing. I was hoping for more of a brief history and I got a lot of stuff I had to sift through. It was hard to find the information I wanted. Wikipedia may not be accurate, but it was easier and shorter.
