THE ANGEL OF HADLEY is a complete study of the legendary figure who supposedly saved the frontier Massachusetts town from an Indian attack during 1675. Whether true or not, the rescue provided our new nation with its most memorable hero for much of the nineteenth century. Sir Walter Scott, James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne and the poet laureate of England retold the story. It was a standard part of sermons, stage plays, history books, children's literature and local color articles. THE ANGEL OF HADLEY clearly sets the tale in context. Beginning with a description of Puritan beliefs, it narrates the precarious relations between whites and Indians during the seventeenth century. King Philip's War almost destroyed several New England towns. The legend of a bearded stranger who appeared while inhabitants of Hadley prayed to be spared from attack, organized them and routed the raiders did not appear until nearly a century later. The reason for the delay may be that the unknown deliverer was one of the judges who signed the death warrant of Charles I. Still a British possession, colonial Massachusetts could ill-afford any royal reprisal and kept secret the deliverance. Or the delay may have been because as our country threw off London's rule, it needed a home-grown example of resistance to tyranny and thus discovered this convenient incident. Whatever the truth, THE ANGEL OF HADLEY vividly tells how audiences' need often dictate what is acceptable os historical fact. Period illustrations and an extensive annotated bibliography complement this intriguing book.
