Slow and ambiguous film with an almost surrealistic overcast. They could have done a better job all around. If you expect the film to follow the original story you may be disappointed. All that said it is pretty interesting.

I think the story could have been made more clear. So here is my take on it for others who might appreciate this sort of interpretive review.

As the story begins Mostel calls attention to a black man in a leather jacket and black hat who is lifting a fur from a white woman. The man runs across the street and is killed by a car. Mostel ambles on to his home that is unhappy because his wife is bedridden and he has no money etc. and is in the pits. He blames God for his problems. In his mind God is punishing him. Then he argues with his wife and she seems to die. He calls a doctor friend. He sits down and dozes off. PLOT SPOILER. As I see it what follows is a dream.

Belafonte appears (apparently the black man that was run over) and says he is an angel that God has sent him on probation -- a black Jewish angel. He is supposed to accomplish a miracle, but he is not sure what it is and it is necessary to get Mostel to believe in him, but he is a sort of street thug and does not know how to do that. He still has his old ways and is is his old self. Mostel starts to believe that he is Jewish, but can't believe that Belafonte is an angel. The sound track gets sort of weird which I imagine is supposed to clue us in that this is a dream, but I think so. These parts of the film work best for me if I assume acting and direction are not just awkward but are intentionally awkward to seem slightly dreamy but not completely obvious.

Now we start to get into the Belafonte character and his cultural background and how it has shaped him.

It may be a movie that mostly adults would see, but I saw it with my mother, and I loved. I found it very confusing, but my mother expained it to me during the movie.

A wonderful of expression of LOVE between an older Jewish couple. An angel comes to guide the "old man" through some difficult times. This is a very heartfelt and funny movie rolled into one.
Zero Mostle and Harry Belafonte make a wonderful team. NOT to be missed! ! ! !

Languishing in obscurity until its DVD release, this Bernard Malamud adaptation provides a fine showcase for Zero Mostel and Harry Belafonte (his first screen role since 1959's "Odds Against Tomorrow"). Czech filmmaker Ján Kadár's American debut suffers from staginess and his uncertain handling of Malamud's short story, but the actors save the day. An engaging fable, "The Angel Levine" is recommended for ambitious cinephiles rather than mainstream viewers.

The story is about the fantasy of a black Jewish angel coming down to earth to help a skeptic. A very interesting development occurs which would have been hard to guess. Thanks to Amazon making this dvd available, I've watched it a number of time. Know no story similar to this.
