From the Author

Proceeds of my book (and much more!) go to some wonderful organizations and rescues that I am so honored to be affiliated with: Kane's Krusade of Springfield, MA; Thomas J. O'Connor, Dakin Humane Society, Best Friends Organization, and Noah's Arks Rescue in SC.  Your support of Rumer's story not only helps change the negative stereotypes towards "pit bulls" but also helps save lives with the proceeds! Please google my name or visit my FaceBook page to see the numerous benefits and fundraisers I partake in to help our 4-legged angels! I am very proud of all my hard work and, I am just beginning in my mission and passion in life to help our fellow creatures! Thank you so very much for your help in this, too.

I am very proud to post the following Kirkus Book Review. My book has been chosen by Kirkus as top 25 in the Best Of 2012! The biggest honor possible!  The toughest book critics in the industry, this review speaks volumes for Rumer's story and sums up so beautifully my reason for writing this book. Thank you for your interest!

"Mercadante, a librarian and animal lover, recounts the life lessons she and her family learned after she adopted a pit bull.

Rumer--named after novelist Rumer Godden--was a puppy "the size of a sausage." She was an ordinary dog who nonetheless touched the lives of everyone who knew her. With her sideways glance and mascara eyes, she shattered the myths attached to this unfairly maligned, naturally loving dog breed. Whether carrying out her self-appointed task of corralling the horses, her daily visits to nearby family members, riding the No. 8 golf cart, playing hockey with her "uncle" or wearing crazy glasses for Halloween, Rumer demonstrated the key to a life well lived: guilelessly give and receive, and seize the moment. Mercadante follows Rumer from her carefree, funny puppy days through a rebellious adolescence, to her physical peak of adulthood and finally her heartbreaking but courageous end. She evocatively brings to life not only the boundless, inspiring spirit of a dog who "smells like fresh-cut grass, baked pork, and a hint of unmentionables," but also the beauty of the Southampton, Mass., landscape and the sacredness of a moment. Even more importantly, she sheds light on the importance of understanding the pit bull for its admirably loyal nature--not for its unfortunate stereotype forged by cruel, inhumane owners intent on turning these promising animals into violent attack dogs. Rumer, on the other hand, proved herself to be a joyous, loving and good-natured soul who wholeheartedly embraced life and eagerly became the center of each family member's life. Also included here is a delightful centerfold featuring photos of Rumer and her family.

A charming portrait of unadulterated pet love."

All I can say is WOW!!!! What a beautiful tribute. This is an amazing book of Unconditional love and family, I was enthralled with every page, laughing, cheering and crying over a beautiful life and tribute to Jolene's and Cheryl's love Rumer. You ladies are truly "Mommies" to each and every one of your children. I know that my life and beliefs are forever changed by reading this book. To see a family so much in love, willing to go above and beyond to care for family, be it human or animal, certainly is an inspiration. I will certainly recommend this book to ALL my friends and family.

OK read, not enough about the dog. The book is more about the author's "beautiful life" in MA. Didn't like the fact that they put the dog through some unnecessary prolonged life treatment at the end. It is clear that they loved the dog and the author pours her love of her into the book, which is touching but enough is enough. It made me sad as I lost my pit bull to cancer in the last year and he was such a big part of my life and was an incredible handsome boy. I too tried to save him, but was very realistic about how much he could go through and didn't want to see him suffer. You do need to know when to let go and as a dog lover I get that it can be hard. I hope that if anyone reading doesn't understand how incredible the breed is gets it and doesn't do what the author and her wife did, which was to BUY pit bulls! They need to be rescued and adopted from overcrowded shelters not purchased..it is just the wrong message in the book about buying them from breeders - imo.

Not the best written book, but I think it was a first attempt by a librarian and not a professional writer. If you want to learn more about her and her family then you won't mind the read, but if you want more about a pit bull I'd pick another book.

Adopt and not shop for a dog please!

As a pitbull owner, I applaud Jolene's struggle to get this book published!! EVERY animal lover should read this book! I admit I cried pretty much through the whole book, but, the world needs to know our babies ARE NOT MONSTERS! Pitbulls are kind, loving, loyal, couch potatoes that have such beautiful hearts with more LOVE to give than any human can even imagine! BRAVO JOLENE!!!!!!!!!

I just finished reading Angel on my Shoulder and it is an absolute must read. Fifteen years ago we were visiting animal shelters looking for a rescue dog for my son. Every animal shelter we visited were full of pit bulls. Hearing all the negativity on this breed at that time I firmly told my son we could not adopt any dog that was even part pit bull. After reading this book I realize just how wrong my views were. This story has opened my eyes to just how gentle the breed can be. The next time we are looking for a dog to join our family we will definetly be looking at the pit bull breed. Jolene's story of Rumer was emotional and heart touching. I laughed with her and cried with her. Rumer was definetly a once in a lifetime dog. I am glad Rumer had such good Mommies to love and take care of her

I have read over 100 memoirs. So many have touched me in ways that will stay with me forever. This memoir takes first place! Every chapter lead me hungry for the next. I laughed out loud, cried out loud, smiled from ear to ear, shook my head in wonderment and couldn't wait to see what Jolene Mercadante would share next about Rumor's life. What Rumor gave to her family, depicted so precisely to us lucky readers, is beyond words actually. Such deep unconditional love and trust. There are people who don't possess half of the traits that Rumor had and shared with all that loved her. I am forever touched by Rumor and Jolene's extraordinary life together. What a journey!!!! Enjoy!

I am a new pit bull owner - our baby crawled onto our property in December '11 - a skinny, tick infested creature who thought grass was a dog food. Now he is a strapping teen who has never slept anywhere other than in bed with us. I really related to the author and know her intentions were well meant, but I cried almost throughout the entire book. A little over the top. From the first pages you knew this dog was doomed; no need to remind us every 10th page. But if you love pits and need to cry- this will work.

I am a dog lover and I have volunteered at my local shelter for over 9 years. I have come to know and appreciate how sweet and family oriented pit bulls are. This is a nice book, but there really isn't much to it. It is fairly repetitive, we get that she REALLY loves her dog. I honestly didn't agree with how they treated the dog, hand feeding, for example. Pit bulls generally require a little discipline and training to become good canine citizens. The dog was never trained to walk on a leash, and that is not responsible dog ownership. Besides that, I did appreciate her love of her dog, and the breed itself. The book could have been a little less flowery, and a bit more biographical. It is just okay.

I purchased this book because of my new-found interest in pit bulls, and it sounded as though I might even learn a bit about them from this book. It started off fine, but I quickly realized that this author is not a professional writer. Lots of jumping around with seemingly no direction or plan, and some chapters that could (and probably should) have been deleted altogether. After a while, the author says the same thing over and over, without making anything more interesting. Disappointing.
