I highly recommend this book for any age!

Something interesting that this book includes are the scale boxes which basically compare a persons size to the living creatures found in each section.

This Smithsonian book has a great ratio of text to pictures, enough information to satisfy my young scientist but not so much that he loses interest.

To review this book I compared it with the 2008 hb edition of Animals: A Visual Encyclopedia by DK which I already own and appears to be going out of print. Smithsonian: The Animal Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth (also a DK publication, I presume meant to replace the other volume) I will call "the Smithsonian."

My first response to the Smithsonian book is that the title is off. Its an encyclopedia of life, not just animals (life is in the subtitle). It includes bacteria, plants, fungi . . . and it doesn't even do a good job anywhere of defining what an animals is in contrast to these other groups. The older DK book does define animals.

The older DK also provides more information on individuals species (Smithsonian, maybe a sentence). To me it looks like they cover about the same number of species. Neither attempts anything near exhaustive (which would require a multivolume work), just an interesting sampling. DK provides better introduction to each section of animals.

Formatting is clearer, easier to read with the Smithsonian. The text is larger, on white background. Pictures are often on white background instead of part of a larger photo. The old DK often uses italicized print on top of pictures or colored background making it hard for people with impaired vision.

Both have a good index.

Both are beautiful books. For a book on animals, I think the old DK is a little bit better. If you already have it, you certainly don't need the Smithsonian. Smithsonian's scope is broader and if you want that, it will better for you. The DK book can still be purchased in paperback, and new hardback through some dealers.

My son is insisting the I hurry and finish the review so that he can have the book. Either would make a child happy.

I don't think I've ever seen a DK book I didn't like - the photography is always amazing! The Animal Book: a Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth by DK and Smithsonian, and is a great new reference book that anyone could look at for hours. For my animal lover daughter, this is a book she has added to her backpack and lugged back and forth to school for several days despite the weight of it. The animals are grouped by type with photographs showing them in proportion to one another. Small snippets of information about each living creature accompany the photographs. The short text is appealing because it is not overwhelming in length and provides a bit more information on each animal.

This is a great reference book for kids to thumb through. There are a ton of great pictures and its a very well made book, it will hold up for a long time even in your kid's hands.

The days of reference books like this seem to be growing shorter, but there should always be a place for books like this for kids. Flipping through the pages and reading things at will is something that can't be replicated by new technology. For the price, this is a great book that your kids will love. Recommended.

This is a large book that is loaded front to back with photos of different animals and bugs. Each page is filled with different high quality pictures that are all labeled by name, and at the beginning of each section is a large 2 page spanning image of an animal in the following category. There is a small section at the bottom of each page that provides a little information for each animal. There isn't much information on each, but I think it's a good simplistic amount. It gives plenty of room for the pictures and anyone wanting to get more information can go online and find out more. The focus here is on the images. The images are what kids want to see most anyway. I find it fun just turning through the pages. You can get it for kids to view or just for a coffee table book.

One of my favorite features of the book is a key on each page showing the size of the animal compared to a person. If it's really small they show the animal sizes when compared to a thumb, increasing to a hand, and for the larger animals they show the whole person.

I bought this for my almost 5 year old daughter and she loves it. The pictures are large, really colorful, and highly detailed (imo). Great job :)

My son loves reference books. It seems that small snippets of facts and giant, colorful pictures are more interesting to him than any long form story or encyclopedia. He often gravitates to books on animals and I am a fan of Jenkins' work.

Wonderfully-illustrated with Jenkins' signature cut paper art, The Animal Book includes an encyclopedia of animal facts--grouped into categories like Defenses and Animal Extremes.

The back of the book includes "More Animal Facts," with 13 more pages of basic facts about a lot of the animals in this book, a glossary, a 10 page section on how books are made from explaining the writing and illustrating to the publishing process, and a bibliography.

I highly recommend this book for any age!

This is a really fantistic animal picture book. I got it mostly for my granddaughter who loves animals and nearly all critters. She will sit for a very long time looking at the pictures and identifying the animals. In addition to mamals, it contains images of fish, birds, common insects and even some dinosaurs. Very high quality prints and would be a nice addition to a home or school library.
