Editorial Reviews

He might not look like much, but it's what's inside that counts. Comic genius Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Big Daddy), TV's Survivor Colleen Haskell, John C. McGinley (Any Given Sunday,The Rock) and Edward Asner (The Bachelor, JFK) star in the most outrageous and hysterical comedy ofthe year. When evidence clerk Marvin Mange (Schneider) answers a 911 call of a burglary in progress, his dream of one day becoming a cop seems to be coming true. But a freak car accident en route to the crime leaves Marvin and his dream a shattered mess. When Marvin awakens a week later, he finds that a deranged scientist secretly used animal organs to rebuild his broken body. Energized by his new and improved parts, Marvin achieves instant fame as a super-cop until his animal instincts start taking over his body at all the wrong times. And when he finds himself falling for the lovely and sexy Rianna (Haskell), it's animal magnetism at its craziest in the funniest and wildest comedy of the yea

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd think October 22, 2001
Format:DVD
Critics have pretty much universally trashed all movies written by/starring SNL alumni from the early '90s, but 'The Animal' sits up there with 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore' as a solidly absurdist comedy. While not a classic, there's enough sustained "smart" dumb humor to make it definitely worthwhile. I've seen too many movies that catered towards the Lowest Common Denominator at every turn. While this one was definitely sold as such, it's much more a case of dumb humor for smart people.
And that Colleen is too darn cute. Her awkward performance was saved in the editing (watch as no dialogue shots stay on her for too long... if at all), but the camera definitely loves her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Laughs, but Mainly Mind Numbing November 22, 2001
By Jason
Format:DVD
The Animal had a really stupid plot, but I thought I would go and rent it anyway. I found that the movie had the humor, but was lacking a storyline, that seemed reasonable.
The Animal is about a looser, who wants to be a cop. But every time he takes the final exam (the physical part), he always fails. He cant seem to get a date, or get any respect from anyone. (Including a group of kids at the police station, which is hilarious). Then some man finds him after a horrific accident. And replaces most of his bodies parts with animal parts. Thus making him able to run, jump, swim, hear, and smell like an animal.
This film isnt too bad, but its not worth buy. One viewing is enough. If you want to see a good Rob Schneider film, go and rent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow". Most of The Animal is predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Urban Drama With All Star Cast September 19, 2005
Format:DVD
Animal is a very intense and dramatic film with an all star African-American cast. Ving Rhames stars in the film as a man named Animal. He basically spent his entire adult life in prison leaving his young son to grow up without a father---and a mother. Darius (Terrance Howard/Hustle and Flow) is raised by his grandmother and turns to hustling as a means of income. Darius has no problem cursing around his grandmother and he just appears to be a common neighborhood thug and he has no problem putting a hot slug in someone. Animal is in jail and can't help his family much while he is on the inside. Jim Brown stars in the film as a revolutionary who attempts to talk some sense into the barbaric and ignorant Animal.

There were a lot of really great African-American actors in this film (Terrance Howard, Taraj Henson, Jim Brown, Ving Rhames, Paula Jai Parker, and Faizon Love), but it pretty much has gone under the radar and hasn't generated much buzz. It's a pretty sad film, it is along the lines of movies like Boyz In The Hood, South Central, Juice, Menace II Society, and Civil Brand. It's an interesting film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent point of view April 4, 2006
Format:DVD
I live in the inner city, and am sometimes uncomfortable with what I see our youths values has become. Common curiosities, values, graciousness and morals seem to be a thing of the past. Family values are non existent, family is non existent, children are left to raise themselves, and their lessons on life values have now become street smarts. This movie "Animal" reaches all the impurities that we see in today's society. Hopefully one day the cycle will break.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Comic and the Cutie June 3, 2001
The Animal gets 4 stars from me just for making me laugh, out loud, with all the rest of the audience in the theater. And besides, who doesn't think Colleen Haskell is just too cute not to be on the big screen? I'm not someone who typically goes in for Jim Carey or Adam Sandler slapstick, Animal House fart-joke humor, but this one got to me. Its funny. Check it out. Rob's dolpin act and goat seducing scenes are utterly hilarious. I'm sure I'll buy this one on DVD when it comes out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good laughs... Not a bad movie June 26, 2001
When i first saw the preview for "The Animal", i was wondering if the movie would have been better if it were rated PG and aimed for a younger audience. This movie did have the plot of a Disney film, and it would have probably been a hit for the 5-10 age range if not for the crude jokes.
In "The Animal", Marvin Mange, played by Rob Schneider, is a police file clerk who is aspiring to be a cop to fufil the dreams of his deceased father, but, as hard as he tries, can't pass the police physical exam (even after taking it 4 times). Marvin, to put it simply, is a big loser that gets no respect in life. This changes after he is terribly maimed in a near-fatal car crash and is rebuilt with animal parts by a mysterious doctor. After this incident, Mange discovers that he has superhuman abilites which he uses to fight crime, and he is finally accepted on the police force. The only problem is that there is a side-effect with his new-found powers; Mange must control his overwhelming animal urges (sex drive, hunger, and bodily functions, to name a few).
This movie wans't much on plot, but the crude humor and silliness of this film gives you a couple of good laughs and something to talk about for a while. "The Animal" isn't going into my Funny Movie Hall of Fame, but i enjoyed watching it.
