The antelope is bored in this story.

I was looking forward to this book as a humorous take on marriage. As a big fan of the late Erma Bombeck, the hole she left in the world of satirical writing has not been filled. I suppose it's very wrong to put such high expectations on a writer. Still, even after lowering the proverbial bar, I was rather underwhelmed by this author's matrimonial and family musings.
About halfway through the book, the picture I had was of a woman sitting at a keyboard desperately trying to find ways to make her everyday experiences seem funny enough to fill up a book. At three quarters of the way through, I gave up hope of even cracking a smile. Some of the stories were cute and mildly funny, but other than that, it certainly didn't live up to its back page promise of laughter and tears. Most of the time I kind of just felt sorry for her husband and the shrill way she treated him at time.
The last quarter of this book has gone u read for a couple of weeks now. Maybe the last couple stories are the salvation for this book, but after the disappointment of the majority if the book, I can't bring myself to pick it up again and finish.
After 18 years of marriage, I found myself thinking of instances in the past that were more entertaining than these, and maybe that's the point — to make the reader remember the great and funny times in their own lives rather than solely from the book. It certainly does do that, which is why it gets two stars. Maybe other readers will be more amused by the author's takes on married life, but unfortunately I wasn't. She came across too harshly for me to really relate to her, which is likely a big part of why I didn't find her writing to be funny. If you enjoyed her prior book, give this one a try. Maybe that one has more depth and history that allows the reader to feel a connection to the author and her family, as this book doesn't. Without it, this book is missing a crucial part.
