This is a book written for children from 8 to 110 years old. It is a collection of fictional short stories about a young bear cub who is an only child. He becomes very selfish, narcissistic, lazy, self-centered and mischievous who earned the nick name of Stingy Bear. He has a socially liberal mother and some what stern and insightful father who is trying to correct errant behavior in their young son or bear cub. Stingy bear has many daily problems, largely due to his craving for money and fame coupled with a lack of concern for others.

The various 52 stories convey an understanding of why the young bear cub makes bad decisions, tries to fool and take advantage of others and convey a moral to encourage readers to avoid similar problems. Much of the vocabulary contains little used but powerful words that can help a reader expand their vocabulary if a suitable dictionary is used to look them up and understand them. Many of the stories are based in a satirical setting relevant to the condition of modern society. These settings provide a powerful exposé on many of the social and political evils of the state of current societies. These demonstrate the sad condition of the US society in particular and other modern societies in general.

The book is written very cleverly on two levels, appealing to young readers by the funny and entertaining events and to more mature readers by the social, political and economic satire of the various stories. One wonderful benefit from having children reading the book is the chance to expand dialog between children and adults, especially parents in settings like home schooling.

One noted story illustrates this in an adventure called the "Bearport Security", an obvious referral to modern day airport security status.

If a bear is being stingy, are you going to be the one to speak up to it. "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures" is a story book meant to be enjoyed by both parents and children alike. Aiming to have the wacky antics of a money grubbing bear for the appeal of children, with satire of current events for more mature readers, "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures" is a treasure trove that all ages can enjoy, highly recommended.

Looking for a hilarious romping good time? This is it! My eight year old son would rather me read this book to him than anything else (including Brooks, Dickens, C.S. Lewis, Calvin and Hobbs, or "The Hobbit").

Honestly though, it is fun to read a children's story that teases modern day American culture, and our obsession with security,"beurobears", and "bearorists" in the classic chapter on "Bearport Security." This book had me enthralled after I read this 2nd chapter. It was such a good laugh. Yes, Stingy Bear is growing up the hard way, trying to earn a quick buck, and learning a few lessons about sharing. The way the world is and the way he thinks it should be seem to be two very different things.

This book breaks all the rules and takes some fair shots at modern discipline (in tone very similar to C.S. Lewis in the Magician's Nephew), and works hard at establishing in Stingy Bear good-old common sense and the tried and true principles of life.

These lessons need to be learned by every young bear that is trying to find their way in the world and how to get along with others. Many of these lessons need to be learned by some older bears before the freedoms we love and cherish are wiped away by over-concerned and security minded conservative beaurobears, and radical environmental and new psychology socialist types who never understood life anyway. It is appropriate criticism for the age we live in.

Even my teenager sits still and listens whenever I whip this book out and read a story or two. This book is fun, there's something special in every story for grown-ups and little ones, and in-betweeners too.
