HEALTH / HERBALISM

The Antibiotic Alternative gives the straight scoop on antibiotics--how they work, potential side effects, dangers of overuse, and compelling reasons to use them with restraint. Dr. Jones’s coverage of these subjects is balanced and supported by an abundance of research. This book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in maintaining optimum health.”
--Linda B. White, M.D., coauthor of Kids, Herbs, and Health and The Herbal Drugstore

When antibiotics were discovered they were hailed as the magic bullet that would put an end to the threat of infectious disease. In fact, in 1969 the U.S. Surgeon General stated that “the war against infectious disease has been won.” But in the last fifteen years we have faced an alarming increase in cases of bacterial infections that will not respond to antibiotics. Dr. Jones explains how overreliance on antibiotics is dangerous because bacteria have found ways to outsmart them, producing resistant strains that prove harder and harder to control. What is more, the use of antibiotics in agricultural feeds and the widespread overprescription of antibiotics has deepened the threat of resistant bacteria to potentially epidemic proportions. Even when appropriately prescribed, antibiotics weaken the immune system by altering the body’s natural bacterial balance.

While antibiotics have their place in treating acute life-threatening conditions, The Antibiotic Alternative shows how the best defense against infectious disease is to strengthen your own immune system. With advice on stress management and diet and complete monographs of a dozen readily available herbs, Dr. Jones shows you how to ward off infectious disease naturally without antibiotic overdependence. She provides directions for making herbal teas, salves, and tinctures and includes specific herbal recommendations for over twenty common ailments ranging from acne to yeast infections.

CINDY L. A. JONES holds a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Cincinnati. She conducted oncology research for several years at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and currently works as a medical writer, consultant, and educator. She lives in western Colorado.

Ever wonder about the origin of some home remedies? Perhaps those of your family or maybe of anothers? Ever wonder if they really work? Dr Jones explains in plain language the origin and the use of many readily avaliable minerials and herbs as home remedies as well as alternatives to doctor prescribed medications. In the time I have owned the book, I have found it to be a regular referral source for "what ails ya". Besides being informative, I found it to be fast and easy reading.

The Antibiotic Alternative is clearly written and very easy to follow. For added depth, the back section of the book provides very in-depth monographs for botanicals including garlic and myrrh. The book also includes recipes and information on harvesting and drying herbs. In addition to treating various conditions naturally, the major message Dr. Jones expresses in The Antibiotic Alternative is the need to strengthen your immune system beforehand. This she explains is the best defense against infectious disease and major health problems.

The Antibiotic Alternative: The Natural Guide to Fighting Infection and Maintaining a Healthy Immune System
By Cindy L.A. Jones, Ph.D.
(Healing Arts Press, a division of Inner Traditions, 2000, ISBN 0-89281-877-8)

Looking back to 1969, when the U.S. surgeon general stated that "the war on infectious diseases had been won" in large part because of antibiotics, makes me realize the necessity of being responsible for my health. In a time when we are bombarded by information and misinformation, it's comforting to have Dr. Jones's guide on hand and to know she holds a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology. Very well laid out with an excellent index for cross-referencing.

My husband is disabled and I've only gone back to work after a long absence from the working world. When we've been sick we've simply had to do without because there was no money for a doctor. Now at last, I can grow some of the things I need to keep us healthy. No recommended I know, but the doctor's antibiotics don't always work and are too expensive to buy and not work.

It doesn't sit on the shelf. This is a working reference in my house. It's been useful at the farm as well. I sent copies to all of my kids to use in conjunction with doctor visits. Little kids have such a time with their ear infections, I thought it would be good information to share.
