Stunning photography, really cool historical photos and maps, interesting history, and an inspiring essay by Bill Bryson. There's even an official AT map tucked into a pocket! This beautiful book has everything for the day hiker, through-hiker, and armchair hiker! Highly recommended!

If you are a hiker or backpacker, or sometimes go for a walk in the country, this book is the history and lore of The Great American Hiking Trail lovingly built and cared for by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and its many member clubs from Georgia to Maine.
The photography will generate "ohs", "Ahs", "OMGs" "Wows", and a possible drool if you're not careful. You WILL cherish it.

Most books about the Appalachian Trail are overly wordy self-centered slogs through someone's "thru hike". This book manages to condense an enormous amount of historical, scientific, and photographic information into a highly readable form that can be read many times. First, leaf through the pictures and marvel at the incredible beauty of "the people's path". Second, read the text, one chapter at a time and become awed at all the effort it took to create and perfect the trail. Third look carefully at the archival information and text boxes along with the associated text and understand how the "AT project" was perceived and realized within its historic context.

The author has a subtle and entertaining sense of humor coupled with encyclopedic information about the trail right up to today. Nowhere else will you find the story of the trail written so compellingly and concisely. Interspersed with the facts are nuggets of insider information about the major actors.

In the final analysis, this book is a call to action without actually coming out and saying so. The author makes very clear the dangers the trail faces from development, pollution, and climate change as well as the need for everyone who loves hiking and the outdoors to support the trail through trail work, political action , and financial support.

I bought this book and have read it from cover to cover. Truth be told, I absolutely adore the photographs. The history of the AT is interesting too.

I am an avid section hiker of the AT in GA, NC, VA, VT, and ME. I have experienced many of the places described in this book and rejoice when seeing the photo in the book of where I have already travelled. Sometimes, I just pull out the book, flip to a page describing some location on the AT, and fantasize about being there.

Great book which I display at home.

I got this book from the library first, and I knew we had to have it!
If you love photography like we do-this book has the most beautiful
photographs of the "Trail"! I hope more people will buy this book to have in their
homes for their children and grandchildren to read. It is on my coffee table now!
