Editorial Reviews

Review

Nu-metal is kept in check by the lucid quality of layers underlying complex electro-rock atmospherics, drum tracks, and synthesizers... -- The Hub Weekly, January 26, 2005

On THE APPROACH, this female-fronted quartet invokes Evanescence, Garbage, latter-day Theatre of Tragedy, and even White Zombie... -- Progression Magazine #47

They layer the throbbing basslines and ragged guitars over schizophrenic synth percussion and their songs are all quite listenable... -- splendidezine.com, October 25, 2004

Through driving beats, inventive effects, charismatic vocals, and appreciable guitar work, I:SCINTILLA creatively shaped an array of musical pieces... -- streamofconsciousness.net, October, 2004

With lyrics spilling with awareness of the unknown, self-worth, and strength, I:SCINTILLA masters emotion through sounds not even imaginable... -- Innocent Words Magazine, August/September, 2004

Product Description

THE APPROACH, the electrifying debut cd from illinois-based I:SCINTILLA, is truly a testament to its title. The 41 minutes of dark and brooding soundscapes speak volumes of the potential the group is about to unearth. Although each track flows to the next, the music seemlessly jumps genres. Hard-hitting industrial treats like "Havestar" and "Scin" give way to the thoughtful electro-pop in "Capsella Bursa Pastoris" and all is wrapped up during the schizophrenic climax of "The Bells". One listen to THE APPROACH will leave the listener begging to know what will happen when the band finally "arrives".

5.0 out of 5 stars Once in a great while... October 22, 2004
Format:Audio CD
...a band comes along that is destined for greatness. I:scintilla is one of these. Those of us fortunate enough to live in the Champaign/Urbana area that have seen them live savor every thundering performance.I've seen a lot of bands come and go for many years (I'm 52!)and one that is both original and true to kickass rock and roll is rare these days. Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, and Tool are good examples. I:scintilla's gutslamming guitar riffs and clubbing bass lines combined with Brittany Bindram's soulful vocals are an experience you never forget. Add brilliantly synthed drums and background ambience and you have a unique package of heavy rock, spacey interludes, and just enough techno to make this band cutting edge.
Their debut album "The Approach" is a faithful studio version of their live show. As good as it is, you don't hear anything that isn't in their performance. Pretty amazing for a band that's only been together for a little over a year. The CD is very well produced, all the tracks blend together seamlessly. Although included lyrics would have been a plus, they can be obtained from their website. Favorite tracks are "Capsella Bursa Pastoris" and "Scin". Get it! See them live if you can!

3.0 out of 5 stars the original I:Scintilla CD January 18, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Like a lot of earlier CDs from other artists, you find lower quality sound, probably due to the equipment or the experience of the artists at the time. Such is the case here. The songs are mostly the same as Havestar, they are just the original mixes. Sad to say, in this case the remixes turned out better, although the original Capsella Bursa Pastoris is still a great song. As much as I like I:Scintilla, I'm not really likely to keep listening to this CD =/

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite band March 18, 2014
By Matthew
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Some people swear by Pandora and other services to find new music, but I like to own my music so I can play my favorite tunes whenever and wherever I please. In browsing Amazon's recommendations for me, I ran across this gem.

I:Scintilla has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I played the demo for a song titled, "worth the wait" on the Dying and Falling album and I loved it so much that I immediately bought several of their albums. It was like a compulsion, I just HAD to own it. I think Optics is the best overall, but other albums have some gems.

Why are they a favorite? While I wouldn't say that any one song is my favorite, but I can play the whole album and not want to skip a track. Plus I've owned this album for many months now and I am still not sick of it. That doesn't happen very often. For most bands there is almost always a track or two that I need to skip or after a month of play I'll never listen again, but this just does it for me.

I personally would categorize the sound as more of a darker industrial sound. The most similar band I know is probably Lacuna Coil, if that comparison helps anyone.

Check out their other albums as well. The Approach seems to have some of their more popular songs with less mixing. It is more of a real-world sound than albums with the same tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Scintilla - The Approach March 24, 2010

Anyone who likes Evanesence will love I:Scintilla. Super-heavy goth metal combined with the hypnotic voice of Brittany. Goth rock doesnt get any better.
