5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on Orthodox Spirituality, March 2, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Arena: Guidelines for Spiritual and Monastic Life (Kindle Edition)
This is the best book on Orthodox spirituality I've ever read. Since there is no difference between the spirituality of a monk in his cell and a layman in the world, much of the book applies to monk, clergy, and lay alike. This book has one of the best explanations of the rationale for and practice of the Jesus Prayer ever written, with extensive notes on where to go for more detailed information. All the while, Bishop Ignatius exhorts the reader to do nothing on his or her own, but always with the guidance of an experienced spiritual father.

This is an excellent edition of the classic text, perfect for Lenten reading. Perhaps overall this work is a bit too lofty for most of us. However, this is something to come back to periodically, beneficial to read in short segments, and the perfect one to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Arena - Revised Edition, August 5, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Arena is one of the best introductions to Orthodox Christian spirituality and monasticism available. It was written in 1867 by Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov. Though the text in this edition is the same as that of the original, this version supersedes the original in that it also contains a glossary, notes, scriptural notes, etc. As was the original English edition, this one was also published by Holy Trinity Publications, Jordanville, NY.

I want to be monk. I can do better right where I am: in the arena. Love God. Love your neighbour. You are your neighbour.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Spiritually Minded..., February 5, 2014

This jewel of a book presents through its content how Eastern Orthodox monks and nuns would internally shape their lives to live in a monastic community. But the book goes much further into the development of spirituality through this most mystical of paths, which is indeed a singular and soul-wrenching journey--and not for the timid of heart! For those looking to deepen their understanding of Christianity and inner spiritual growth, I recommend this book. It will take the reader into his or her own heart, which becomes the Arena where all battles can be fought and won.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Orthodox Prayer Life, October 26, 2013

As advertised, this book is a clearly written, interesting survey of the spiritual lessons learned by an intelligent, disciplined, and dedicated man of God. The translation is excellent; you can hardly tell the original was written in Russian. Anybody interested in going beyond the spiritual pabulum offered by contemporary Western Christianity should enjoy this book. It is a wonderful overview of 2000 years of Orthodox spirituality and monastic tradition.
