Oops
The Arrival, follows the girls' adventures as they stumble through a foreign and often hostile world where humans are NOT at the top of the food chain. Friendships are forged and love teeters on the horizon while the threat of civil war looms thanks to the girls' very unexpected 'gifts'. Will the girls master these gifts in time to survive a war in which, not only are they the ultimate weapons, but also the ultimate prize...

From the Author

I wrote this book as a way to address my own frustrations at the frequent downplaying of female characters in action/adventure/romance stories. I wanted girls who did it all! And it took me on some interesting journeys--including six months of long sword training combined with self defence and bare knuckle fighting (not so great for the thin skinned ;p). Do check out the sample as I write in a not-so-common style and if you do read it, I hope it whisks you away to a magickal place with griffons, dragons, and kick-ass girls who aren't afraid to stand up for themselves. Screw being the damsel in distress!

4.0 out of 5 stars Light hearted and fun, well worth giving a go! February 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I initially struggled with the beginning of the book because I didn't like how the multiple POVs were done. I am used to works where if there is multiple POVs they are all in third person and there are clear section or chapter breaks before switching. MacDonald's POV switches are confusing at first, but I instantly fell in love with the characters and was pretty sure I'd like the plot so I persevered. I am glad I did! The style of POV switching gelled with me rather early on (the first fight scene) and I found that it ended up working quite well. I loved the author's voice and humour throughout the book.

The characters were great and I was right about loving the plot! I am currently reading Traci Harding's The Ancient Future and think if you like that you will probably like The Arrival also. Both have very similar themes (strong female leads who can defend themselves, transported elsewhere and fall in love etc) but The Arrival is much more light-hearted and humorous and I found it to be a faster read with a less complicated storyline.

The Arrival is a light and fun read and its well worth $1 to see if it amuses you!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Arrival (BirthRight Trilogy) April 17, 2011
By Rayven
Format:Kindle Edition
The Arrival is the first book in the Birthright Trilogy by Nicole MacDonald. I must say when I first started to read The Arrival, I had my doubts. The main characters Cat, Kassie, Sian and Loi seemed very one dimensional and lacked depth. But as the book progressed, I realized this was a result from the author's writing style. From the very first page the author jumps around from different points of view, which makes for a very confusing read. This distraction took away from the lure of the characters and left me frustrated.

As I continued to read, I was surprised to find myself caught up in the second half of the book. Once I got used to the different POVs it gave a bit more insight into the interactions between characters and added depth to both the characters and the story. One of the things that I loved most about this story was Nicole MacDonald's descriptions of the fantasy creatures. Through her words the Griffon came to life within this story in such a vivid way.

This book lays the groundwork for the next two in the trilogy. For this tale builds slowly as you watch the characters develop and the plot starts to take shape. This story comes to a head in the most unexpected way that leaves you wanting to have the next book in hand.

The Arrival brings nothing new to the Fantasy Genre, but it is an entertaining love story with a magical twist, and damsels in dirty dresses save the day. So if you are in the mood for an easy and fun read then this book is for you.

Nicole MacDonald is a self published author from New Zealand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Transport yourself to another world, April 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I do not normally read much paranormal or fantasy fiction and was seriously wondering if I should be reviewing this book at all. Was it going to be fair to the author when I was prejudiced against the genre without even reading a word. I like my fiction based in reality and this novel is about as far removed from reality as you can possible get.

As I started to read about the heroines Cat, Kassie, Sian and Loi my doubts continued because it was confusing with the continual switching between the different characters and their viewpoints. It took awhile for the structure of the story to settle down but the author seems to get into the flow of her writing and the interaction between the characters improves.

It really is a far fetched and ridiculous story but once I got over my initial prejudices and the jerky start it did turn out to be an entertaining read and I am sure fans of this genre will be particularly enthralled with the girls adventures.

The four protagonists are friends living in New Zealand in the 21C and being fed up with the lack of decent men in their lives, decide for fun to cast a love spell to try and find their soul mates. In casting this spell they get somewhat more than they bargained for finding themselves transported to another world, which is full of weird and wonderful creatures. I do not want to include any spoilers but the girls find they have amazing magical powers which they have to use as the momentum and tension grows.

The ending is certainly a cliff hanger and if you enjoy the book will certainly leave you waiting for more adventures that will transport you to another world.

More About the Author

Nicole MacDonald is a thirty something year old Kiwi who loves to read and moonlights as a novelist. From a young age she fantasized about being the heroine in the books and/or movies she watched and credits the series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' for really inspiring her. Writing only occurred to her a few years ago after reading an abysmal tale with silly useless females where upon she decided to write a tale solely for herself where the girls got to kick butt without the usual sob story--betrayed/abused/abandoned etc. That little tale eventuated into the BirthRight Trilogy.
Nicole's current daydream is that Joss Whedon (aka the genius of film) will discover the BirthRight Trilogy and demand the film rights to it. Until then, she's working on several other writing projects and aiming to explore the world with her partner.
