Book Description

Love can take you places you never knew existed.
Cat, Kassie, Sian and Loi are anything but damsels in distress. Bored with their current dating scene, the four women dabble in the arcane and cast a love spell to locate their soul mates. To their astonishment, they wake on another planet.
The Arrival follows the women as they stumble through a foreign and often hostile world, where myth is reality and sword and sorcery rule. The women set forth hoping to discover a way home but instead end up fighting for their lives. Help arrives in the form of five enormous griffons and their human riders—sent by Elena, the Sorceress of Elion, who desires to meet these new arrivals. Friendships are forged and love teeters on the horizon as the women begin to find their footing in this strange new world.
But Elena is not the only Sorceress to seek them.
Far South in the realm of Vo’Arum, Jenviet DeNaga senses the arrival of the four Earth women and recognizes the potential within them. Finally, the weapons she has coveted for so long have returned to the world of Gar’nyse and now the race is on to possess them.

Books two and three of The BirthRight Trilogy, Awakening, and, Feel the Burn are now available. For further information about The BirthRight Trilogy you can follow its facebook page, or pop through to the Amazon Author page.

Editorial Reviews

'If you love fantasy, but want something NEW, then this is the book to try. A proper quest based adventure with a curious sense of realism and a love story that doesn't grate. With new twists on creatures we've seen before, and brand new creatures. The battles were some of the best I've read, and I read a lot! As a whole, this trilogy is a phenominal piece of fantasy literature. I cannot recommend it enough.' NetGalley Reviewer

'The characters are incredible, the story is entertaining as well as well written, and the world building is amazing!  The love story twisted in with the magic and the fantastical creatures is great.  It is an all around MUST read!' The Wormhole (Blog) Reviews

'This book is an adventure and a half. ...Think Lord of the Rings meets a really interesting and witty chick lit book' Sweet Tea & Book Reviews
'An entertaining read ... fans of this genre will be particularly enthralled with the girls adventures.' LindyLouMac Reviews
'Once you get past the author's unconventional story telling style--swapping to another point of view--this is a great read. I enjoyed enough to go on and buy the next two books in the trilogy, and after a reading splurge on a three week holiday, Nicole MacDonald's characters and world were those that have stayed with me the longest.' NetGalley Reviewer
'It is a good quest based story. Those fond of paranormal romance will most likely enjoy the story' Tiffany's Bookshelf Reviews

'AWESOME!! Despite being skeptical of the fantasy genre I was pleasantly surprised and left wanting more. I struggled to put this book down and despite my busy schedule found myself trying to read it any free moment, I had to find out what happened next!' Amazon Reviewer

From the Author

I wrote this book as a way to address my own frustrations at the frequent downplaying of female characters in action/adventure/romance stories. I wanted girls who did it all! And it took me on some interesting journeys--including six months of long sword training combined with self defence and bare knuckle fighting (not so great for the thin skinned ;p). Do check out the sample as I write in a not-so-common style and if you do read it, I hope it whisks you away to a magickal place with griffons, dragons, and kick-ass girls who aren't afraid to stand up for themselves. Screw being the damsel in distress!

I liked the story. And I said so. But I made the mistake of writing an honest review that mentions the editing problems and the problems with the sudden shifts in point of view. Yes, it's a legitimate style as the author asserts OVER AND OVER again if anyone mentions this problem (just read the comments). But for it to be WELL DONE there has to be these small things called transitional words or phrases to assist the reader. But if you aren't part of the author's cheerleading squad, your review is going to get marked as not helpful. Which isn't fair or helpful to the prospective readers, but apparently honesty or constructive critisism isn't as important to the author as perceived popularity. Which is a real shame as she will lose more readers than she woos if she wants to progress in her writing career. Again, I liked the story but this blatant disregard of the honest review process has turned me off of her future works. Amazon needs to look into this.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Arrival (BirthRight Trilogy) April 17, 2011
By Rayven
Format:Kindle Edition
The Arrival is the first book in the Birthright Trilogy by Nicole MacDonald. I must say when I first started to read The Arrival, I had my doubts. The main characters Cat, Kassie, Sian and Loi seemed very one dimensional and lacked depth. But as the book progressed, I realized this was a result from the author's writing style. From the very first page the author jumps around from different points of view, which makes for a very confusing read. This distraction took away from the lure of the characters and left me frustrated.

As I continued to read, I was surprised to find myself caught up in the second half of the book. Once I got used to the different POVs it gave a bit more insight into the interactions between characters and added depth to both the characters and the story. One of the things that I loved most about this story was Nicole MacDonald's descriptions of the fantasy creatures. Through her words the Griffon came to life within this story in such a vivid way.

This book lays the groundwork for the next two in the trilogy. For this tale builds slowly as you watch the characters develop and the plot starts to take shape. This story comes to a head in the most unexpected way that leaves you wanting to have the next book in hand.

The Arrival brings nothing new to the Fantasy Genre, but it is an entertaining love story with a magical twist, and damsels in dirty dresses save the day. So if you are in the mood for an easy and fun read then this book is for you.

Nicole MacDonald is a self published author from New Zealand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't Get Past the Formatting Issues July 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I only made it to Chapter Four before giving up.

I'm not talking the occasional spelling or grammatical error here. The book switches between first and third person narrative - in the same paragraph! You can't tell which character is talking or who they're talking to. The same thing with the tenses, mixing present and past - in the same sentence. It was PAINFUL.

The truth is, there was some promise here. It's why I stuck around as far as I did. The characters were portrayed as being interested and involved in their own lives, with lots of hobbies. It makes a change from this type of alternate world scenario, where most characters are introduced as lonely, unfulfilled, etc. In other words, just waiting for the rescue. I would have liked to spend more time with this type of character instead, but I just couldn't stand it.

I hope MacDonald gets some help from a friend willing to read this and offer instruction and suggestion in BASIC English. If she reformats this book, I would be willing to try again. As is, however, it isn't worth your time.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Secret Life of Grass July 16, 2011
By Eva J.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If there was a documentary to be made about grass, it would probably end up being more entertaining than this book.

Try as I might, I could not get myself to enjoy The Arrival... and I honestly really wanted to like it. The plot sounds like something that would actually be interesting to read. Casting a spell that ends up taking four friends to another world? Okay... that sounds like fun.

But right from the start I knew there was going to be a problem as the author jumps from first to third person back to first, and from one person's internal dialog to another's verbal response. Can I have a decoder ring please? What the heck's going on here?

I wouldn't normally have a problem with an author jumping around like this - plenty have pulled off this feat successfully, while clearly designating who is speaking as well as being artful in it's execution. However, this author is both clumsy and remedial in conversations as well as inarticulate in who we're supposed to be following. It takes some skill to be able to juggle four main characters without losing the reader or diluting the storyline and relationships... and apparently this author just doesn't have a knack for it. Nor does the author have a knack for scene transition, startling readers at the sudden change of time and venue. Oh, and let's not forget that there are an annoying amount of grammatical errors to enrich this already confusing word stream.

I also encountered something that I thought was only a myth... spontaneous chapter endings. How this author happens to make me wince at the awkward and ill-timed endings of each chapter is beyond me. I never thought that this was even possible...

More About the Author

Nicole MacDonald is a thirty something year old Kiwi who loves to read and moonlights as a novelist. From a young age she fantasized about being the heroine in the books and/or movies she watched and credits the series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' for really inspiring her. Writing only occurred to her a few years ago after reading an abysmal tale with silly useless females where upon she decided to write a tale solely for herself where the girls got to kick butt without the usual sob story--betrayed/abused/abandoned etc. That little tale eventuated into the BirthRight Trilogy.
Nicole's current daydream is that Joss Whedon (aka the genius of film) will discover the BirthRight Trilogy and demand the film rights to it. Until then, she's working on several other writing projects and aiming to explore the world with her fiance.
