5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding bargain March 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD
For those who are new to the great Carlo Maria Giulini, here is the place to start. While this set does not contain all of the recordings any Giulini-lover would want to have, it contains so much that is essential that one can always supplement what's missing. After listening to these recordings, one will come away with a good understanding of what makes Giulini so unique and special amongst the many conductors who have performed these works ably. Giulini was an artist of the highest distinction, and many including myself consider him among the greatest conductors of the 20th century, even if he had a relatively small repertoire.

Here are the contents:

Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (LAPO)
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 'Choral', Berlin Philharmonic (BPO)

Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 (Complete), Vienna Philharmonic (VPO)
Brahms: Variations on a theme by Haydn for orchestra, Op. 56a 'St Anthony Variations' (VPO)
Brahms: Tragic Overture (VPO)

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E Major (VPO)
Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 in C minor (VPO)
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor (VPO)

Debussy: La Mer (LAPO)

Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 'From the New World', Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO)

Franck: Symphony in D minor (BPO)

Psyché: Psyché et Éros (BPO)

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 in D major (CSO)

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (CSO)

Ravel: Ma Mère l'Oye (LAPO)
Ravel: Rapsodie Espagnole (LAPO)

Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D759 'Unfinished' (CSO)

Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discovering Giulini February 18, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My indefatigable exploration of great conductors has finally gotten around to Giulini. I'm not quite sure why it has taken so long. My only excuse is that the discographies of the most important figures are enormous, and the number of reissues outruns the amount of free time one has for listening.

In any case, in this hundredth anniversary year of Giulini's birth, I have taken it upon myself to explore his recorded legacy in extenso, and this reasonably priced collection from DG Italia seemed like the place to begin. Indeed, it has provided many ear- and mind-opening opportunities to appreciate this conductor's distinctive approach to his favored repertoire. Previously, I had known Giulini's work principally through recordings of opera and sacred music--his famous EMI studio recordings of Verdi *Requiem* and *Don Giovanni*, plus a couple of orchestral works (I have always loved his Vienna Symphony account of Bruckner's Second, now on Testament). But these intermittent encounters could not have prepared me for the sheer magnificence of the performances anthologized in this collection.

Where to begin? Perhaps with my first impressions. When I received this set, I wasted no time in sampling the Brahms cycle with the VPO--always one of my favorite ensembles. The introduction to the Brahms first riveted my attention right away: such sumptuous playing; such luminous textures; such shapely phrasing, such sensitivity to the music's inherent pathos! Here is a conductor who knows where he is going and how exactly to get there. These impressions persisted as I made my way through the Brahms cycle, though there were some moments of consternation as I became aware of Giulini's predilection (at least at this stage of his career) for deliberate tempos.
