3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Sigmund Humanski on May 17, 2011
Format: Hardcover
Not all of us are blessed with the gifts to create works of art, but with careful nurturing we can develop the ability to appreciate and love them. Jan Wahl's wonderful new book, perfectly illustrated by Rosalinde Bonnet, evokes the magic and richness of a life that includes art. There is much wisdom in this gem of a book. One pearl of truth Wahl addresses is the adage "Buy What You Love". As the young Oscar acquires pictures throughout the story into adulthood, he only buys what he likes, what "speaks" to him, and because he follows his heart he's greatly rewarded in the end.
Jan Wahl's poetic text captures the alchemy that occurs when viewing and re-viewing works of art infused with one's love. Rosalinde Bonnet's illustrations reflect the child-like innocence and state of grace which provides Oscar with happiness, contentment, and meaning throughout his life. Bonnet cleverly enhances Wahl's ending by alluding to the "Circle of Life". In the beginning she depicts Great-Granny the elderly artist, inspiring young Oscar the collector, but as the book ends, he's become and elderly collector who is shown inspiring a young artist.
This book is pure magic! Buy copies for yourself and all the children and artists and collectors you know.

What a lovely, uplifting, and beautiful book. I have been searching for books like this for my daughters -- ones that have beautiful images and positive story lines. I found the Art Collector in a museum book shop and my family throughly enjoyed reading the book and looking at the beautiful pictures. I will research more books by the author and illustrator to add to our library.
