About the Author

Cynthia Knox is an award-winning artist who specializes in works of traditional realism. She is a Signature Member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a juried member of the International Guild of Realism, commissioned portrait artist, and occasional art inustructor. Her artwork is in shows, private collections, and on her website at www.cynthiaknox.com. Cynthia credits her passion and inspiration for art to a deep love for God and encouragement from her parents and family. She currently lives in Clifton Park, New York, with her wonderful husband, Jeff, and their two beautiful daughters, Katharine and Abby.

Pat Averill considers herself primarily self-taught, although she has attended an array of workshops and seminars on oil, watercolor, and colored pencil. She considers the way she figuratively "inhales" the colors, values, and shapes she observes around her to be an integral part of her artistic process. To her, the creation of art is based on a combination of life experiences and the artist's reaction to the subject matter. Pat is a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, and she has won numerous awards in juried international competitions for her work in colored pencil.

Eileen Sorg is an award-winning artist who lives on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State with her husband, Scott, and their terrier, Scout. Working primarily with a mixed media technique of colored pencil, watercolor, and ink, Eileen always strives for unique compositions that set her work apart. She spends much of her time creating custom artwork for her many clients. Eileen is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and a juried member of the International Guild of Realism and the Society of Animal Artists in New York. Her work is represented in several regional galleries and can be found on the web.

Debra Kauffman Yaun discovered that she had a knack for drawing people when she was a young girl growing up in Tampa, Florida. After graduating from the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, Debra worked as a fashion illustrator. She has drawn and painted many commissioned portraits, several of which have been of children--her favorite subject to draw. Debra's artwork has been published in several art magazines and books, and she has won numerous awards, including an international award. She is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, having served as president of the Atlanta chapter, and she is a juried member of the Portrait Society of Atlanta. She also enjoys teaching classes and workshops in portraits and colored pencil.

I love the close up details and instructions given here. I'm not an absolute newby to this medium, but I definitely learned a lot of good techniques. The biggest thing I appreciate is the color mixing, if you pay attention you can build your own palette from this book. The reason I didn't give this five stars is because I have seen some of the demos in other books, and so I feel like I paid for what I already have. This doesn't overtake the book, so don't let this fact stop you from buying this really great book!

The colored pencils blended in with paints when I used as described in the book, This book, as written, is excellent for beginners and experienced oil painters. The methods compliment each other in the same picture.

I have tried several colored pencil books and I keep coming back to the Walter Foster ones. This one does have some repetition from some of the smaller books - landscapes and flowers that I particularly noticed - so if you haven't gotten any of the smaller books, then this is a great starting place. If you have any of the others, this will have some overlap. However, it is a good book with good instructions and nice sketches you can either enlarge and copy to start you off. I have trouble drawing stick people :) so I do like to have something of a guide/outline to follow. It allows me to get right into the use of the colored pencils without having to agonize over the drawing part.

This book is like "look what I can do, don't you wish you can too? Here's a few pointers, good luck." I used pencils 25 years ago and have just recently rediscovered them. Bought the book hoping to be inspired and learn some new stuff. Maybe I just know more than I thought. Amazing work in the book. There are projects, each chapter has different drawings with images showing you the progression, very brief notes about technique and a list of the colors they used. I was disappointed that there aren't any portraits included, skin tones are not easy. The projects in the book are very detailed and not for the eager to be done in one sitting artist. I'm talking hours and hours of tiny little strokes. So, if that is what you're after, this is the book for you. I don't have that long of an attention span. I prefer my little artist trading cards I can knock out in a few hours at most.
