I had to give it 1 star since the binding has rendered the book useless. The publisher owes all the artists whose works appear in the book and all the people that enthusiastically purchased this book an apology. The art and the amount of it would have garnered a 5 from me if the binding was anywhere near what it should have been.
Some may think 1 star is harsh, but a book is meant to be looked through, and concept books especially. This one you can not.
|Length: 0:55 Mins|
Joe Madureira is the creative director for Darksiders and the artistic direction is largely influenced by his designs.
The book is packed with hundreds of concept art on the characters, environment, weapons, artifacts, CG models and other illustrations. There are lots of sketches for anything that moves. The environment art are mainly coloured pieces. The art is beautiful and there are details everywhere.
The text was lacking as there are only character and location descriptions. With so much art, I was expecting some artist commentary regarding the game but there is none. Strangely, there's also no foreword and introduction -- you go straight into the art on page 1.
The binding for a book this thick is quite bad, hence the average rating I gave. It's fragile and will break when you open it too much. The alternative hardcover edition is only sold at Udon's site and cost too much.
It's a great art book let down by the terrible binding. Darksiders and video game art fans can expect bittersweet satisfaction.
Then here comes THE ART OF DARKSIDERS.. I'm not going to to go into much detail because I don't think
I have to, the art here is amazing. It has lots of concept art, cg renders, character design art,
environments, promotional pictures and everything is really just awesome. Its just AWESOME!..
If I could rate the book on art alone.. I would give it a 5 out of 5...
NOW here is the downside...
The book's binding is horrible and you cant even open the book completely without it tearing apart..
I thought it was just my book but my teacher's book is also like this and from the reviews I've read,
other people are having this problem as well. My book's pages started falling out after the first day
I got the thing ............................I even got my book replaced by amazon and now I'm afraid
to really look at it now due to fear of the binding screwing up again. This is sad because the book's
art is so amazing.. but it has such horrible binding.. other Udon artbooks don't have this problem
WHY DOES THIS ONE??.. An alternative choice is to buy the hardcover version of the book but at 80$...eh who knows..
After owning this book for a short while, the pages are already starting to come out. It seems the gluing job was not done that well. I haven't even flipped through it too much and this is already happening. I would have thought the binding would have been better for such a heavy book.
the bulk of this book is even worse, its just environmental artwork. basically pictures of backgrounds, objects, areas, etc., along with logos, item icons, etc., nothing that is too exciting to look at in large quantities, nor anything i would want an art book just for.
the quality of the book itself is shabby, as well. from just normally looking through it, the spine becomes unglued and pages start to fall out. i even returned the book and got another, and it still did the same thing. i am very gentle with my stuff, so it certainly wasn't from rough-handling. i am not sure how the Hardcover version fairs as i have the Softcover.
i would really love to see another Darksiders art book released, but dedicated to only the characters, with lots of new artwork done especially for the book. now THAT would be a book worthy!Read more ›
