This is an excellent retrospective artbook that looks back the concept art created for DreamWorks Animation films.

Over the past 16 years, they have made 30 films, from the Antz in 1998 to Home (2014) which is the last film to be included in this book.

It's a huge and 324-page thick hardcover book. It feels very substantial.

Behind the subdued white cover are pages after pages of art. The layout is simple and effective at playing up the beautiful artworks. There are medium sized images to those that extend to the edges.

The films included in the book are

Antz (1998)
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
The Road to El Dorado (200)
Chicken Run (2000)
Shrek (2001)
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)
Shrek 2 (2004)
Shark Tale (2004)
Madagascar (2005)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
Over the Hedge (2005)
Flushed Away (2006)
Shrek the Third (2007)
Bee Movie (2007)
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)
Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Shrek Forever After (2010)
Megamind (2010)
Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
Puss in Boots (2011)
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
The Croods (2013)
Turbo (2013)
Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
Home (2014)
It's a good mixture with some traditional animated and stop motion films in addition to the 3D animated films which represent the trend nowadays.

Note that many films in that list have dedicated artbooks.

Really substantial book for the price, full color spreads and crammed full of inspiring development art!

PRO
- Great amount of environment/prop/keyframe design
- Lots of beautiful full colored visual development art
- Lots of sketches/process work
- Lots of unpublished work that are not in "making of books"
- Very satisfying display of art from every single Dreamwork film
- Good way to see how films have changed from 2D to 3D and how that effects the design process.

CONS
- Some films don't have as many images as I would have like to seen
- Not so many character development images, so if that's what you're looking for you're better of getting the individual "making of" book

OTHER
- Visual focused book, not much writing.

Personally loved this book, a great buy for those who are seriously studying animation and those who simply enjoy beautiful work.

Filled with rich images that sweep across the pages, my mind was taken for a wonderful, creative, and nostalgic journey. DreamWorks Animation has been one of my favorite studios for quite some time now, and this "Art of" book supplies for an excellent reminder. I enjoy that they do not stick to one film for too long however they are sure to leave nothing out. Each movie has layout designs, environmental displays, a few character sketches (a lot done by the ever intriguing Nico Marlet) and a few inspiring words from those how worked on the film. It was nice to see a slice of every stage of the process, and not just completed digital renders. For aspiring animators, concept artists, or anyone else who wishes to join the field (or people who just enjoy good art) this book is perfect and is truly a celebration in itself.

But it's still nice to see all of the behind the scenes ideas and concepts. Worth picking up and flipping through at least once, even if you don't end up buying it. It's a shame more libraries don't stock the art of books, they're a great resource.

The art in this book was gorgeous. I enjoyed reading the comments from directors and artists etc. I do wish their was more character art and perhaps a movie summary for those who haven't watched the film, but those are personal opinions.

Firstly, this book is big (over 300 pages), and it is beautiful.

The cover is classy and sophisticated with a simple black, white and grey design, allowing it to look good on any bookshelf or any coffee table. The inside, however, is full of large, richly colored images.

This book features concept art for each of 30 DreamWorks animated feature films so far, covering the CG, 2d, and stop motion/claymation animated movies from `Antz' and `The Prince of Egypt' in 1998 through to their most recent releases and the yet to be released `Home'.

Most movies have about 10-12 pages each of production art. There are a few, but not lots, of character designs, but the real stars of this book are the beautifully large layout scenes (many including characters) and environment designs. In a book this size there's loads of space for the large, full color images to see all the detail. There's plenty of full page images and even some big, single-image, double page spreads.

A number of these films have had their own dedicated "art of" books, but several of them are now out of print and some, especially for the earlier films, have never had a book showing their conceptual art. For the movies that have had their own books, there is a fair amount of repeated artwork but there are also some new images to enjoy. Personally, I think the printing and clarity of the images are much better in this book, than in the previously printed solo movie art books.

The book is almost completely made up of images with around 4-5 quotes per movie from producers, directors and artists to give snippets of insight in to their thoughts and processes connected to the captivating production art.

This art book is really great value for the price, and I'm really happy I bought it. Definitely one of my favourites for 2014 thus far.
