I love this book. Archila has done a wonderful job of pulling the reader into three different worlds: the visceral world of war and pain in El Salvador, the trying and slippery land of transition, and the new world of discovery and reassessment in the US. Every line in Archila's poetry is surprising and moves deeper into emotional poignancy. It's difficult to pick a favorite poem because THE ART OF EXILE reads as a narrative with each poem building on the poem before it and opening a door to the poem to come. That said, each piece is a stand-alone gem that can deliver the full scope of intellectual and emotional fulfillment through its lyrical craftsmanship. I highly recommend this first collection of poetry to any reader looking to find a book that is more than the sum of its parts. Kudos to Archila for excellent book construction and order, but more so for doing the difficult task of telling a story through lyrical poetry.
