While the end was a bit too Death in Venice for me (even if it was intentionally nodding to that book), I very much enjoyed this book -- it's a smart baseball book and a compelling college book. Great characters and a real page turner.

Lots of baseball but a fairly good story, unfortunately I had no feelings for any of the characters, I did not feel they were likeable or developed enough.

received lots of local press in wisconsin, was looking forward to reading. characters were too far removed from reality to be totally engaging. was expecting to love this book, but did not.

I did not find the characters or the plot very credible or interesting. Folks seem to split down the middle on whether they like this one, count me on the side that was not very excited. I gave it a few stars, because the author does have a good writing style.

I am not such a Melville fan as my friend and looked for the book itself to interest me, not its connection to Melville,

As a baseball fanatic I was drawn to this book. It is a great story and the sports talk is delicious. But its theme is not fielding but life. The most important thing is not that we play shortstop flawlessly, like music. It's not the winning, the
fame, the success. It's how we deal with life when we cannot make that stupid throw to first base anymore. How we recover
and go forward. Wonderful!

If you are an athlete involved in competitive sports you may get it, but I found it trivial, shallow--too many issues going on at once to be credible. My husband loved it, just different tastes.

The characters are extremely interesting, and the plot is finely woven among all the players. It is a well thought out book, and very well written.

I loved this book. Very interesting story line and always kept me wanting to read more. I liked that it had more substance to it than just sports.
