Book Description

In 1979, Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, a successful surgeon, took a class from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross that focused on crayon drawing for healing, especially with patients facing life-threatening disease. Siegel incorporated into his practice these techniques — many of which were laughed at by others in the medical community. But his Exceptional Cancer Patients “carefrontation” protocol facilitated healings, often deemed miraculous, and attracted attention. “Dr. Bernie” discovered and shared the fact that while patients might need antibiotics, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, their bodies also want to heal. He found that this innate propensity could be aided by unconventional practices, including drawing. Why? Drawing produces symbols often representing the subconscious. Siegel shows how to interpret drawings to help with everything from understanding why we are sick to making treatment decisions and communicating with loved ones. All those facing ill health, and those caring for them, personally and professionally, will welcome the hands-on, patient-proven practices offered here.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A beautiful guidebook of truth and wisdom written by a genuine healer-sage. Bernie Siegel has given us a masterpiece.”
Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts

“When we combine the art of healing with the science of curing, modern medicine becomes whole. Thanks, Bernie, for showing the way.”
Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind

“We are grateful these days to find a physician who understands the difference between practicing medicine and healing, who values the role of the human psyche in both its pathologizing and healing forms. Dr. Siegel’s Art of Healing is aptly named, for healing is an art, and healing encompasses the whole person through respecting the dynamic power of the psyche to harm or heal any of us.”
James Hollis, PhD, Jungian analyst and author of What Matters Most

I purchased the Kindle edition of this book. It is a wonderfully engaging book, and I was deeply involved in it when I reached a section of the book in which there were several dozen images. Each of the images, drawings, was described by the author of the book.
However, in the kindle version of the book, all of the images are grouped together, and the analysis of the images is located elsewhere in the book. Perhaps the paper version of the book is the same. But, as any Kindle reader knows, it is extremely difficult to flip back and forth through an e-book multiple times. I ended up giving up on this exercise and will now order the paper version of this book.
I'm amazed that the e-book was not arranged so that each image is presented together with the descriptive analysis. That just seems logical.
So, to recap..... this is a Wonderful Book and you ought not be discouraged from reading it by reason of the e-book version being disorganized.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Heals Body February 6, 2014
Format:Paperback
The more that I hear from Bernie Siegel, the more I am totally impressed by the power of self-healing. Since retiring from his well-respected general and pediatric surgical practice in 1989, he has dedicated himself to humanizing the medical establishment and empowering patients to induce their own healing. This book is a comprehensive overview of self-healing techniques (like laughter therapy, dream analysis, and creative writing) paired with case studies complete with empirical research that prove that these are valuable tools in medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

Because Bernie is a physician, he is able to show how to combine these methods with modern medicine. The Doctor's Rx at the end of each chapter has suggested exercises to encourage readers to apply the concepts he covers. A great example of this comes from page 39: "Take a mental wwalk through your body; visualize healing and health; think about areas of discomfort and the words you'd use to describe your experience of symptoms; what relationships/situations are also described by those same words?"

As I learned in the most recent Art Heals podcast, the real turning point for him was when he studied the use of crayon drawings by patients facing life-threatening diseases. Who would think that such a simple activity could mean so much, and imagine how it could improve the health of people who are not terminally ill! He recommends that readers of his book have the crayons ready to draw a picture of yourself before reading Chapter 6 when you learn how to analyse drawings. Do it!! I haven't come across a book this good on the topic since Barbara Ganim's Art and Healing: Using Expressive Art to Heal Your Body, Mind, and Spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different but a nice read October 16, 2013
By Raychel
Format:Kindle Edition
This book ended up being much different than I expected, but still a good read. It is much more uplifting and light hearted than I anticipated and that is due to the wonderful nature of the doctor behind it. This book provides ways for us to assist in our healing from within. I am a big fan and advocate of believing we hold within us an enormous amount of power to create change and healing within our bodies and this is a great book looking at various ways to do this without assuming a one size fits all approach. I think you must absolutely approach this book with an open mind or else you will be left rolling your eyes and thinking that perhaps the doc is a little off his rocker at times. I appreciate the fact that he takes healing seriously without necessarily taking himself too seriously. His good humor through out the books make for not only an enlightening read, but an entertaining one as well.

In all honesty I find the description of the book a little misleading. It sounds like you are going to be reading a lot more about a particular branch of art therapy in the healing process than you actually get from this book. That is one aspect of the author's methods for healing but the book includes many others, from using laughter to having pets to analyzing dreams.

This book is a great reminder that no matter what battle we are facing, there are things we can do to take control and feel powerful in a situation where we might otherwise feel powerless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bernie Siegel is a REAL doctor! November 1, 2013
Format:Paperback
Prayer Prescriptions For Nurse Healers (Volume 1)Bernie Siegel holds the missing link to healing and self-healing: draw pictures to find a direct route to your subconscious mind and release the blocks that obstruct optimal health.

This book explains how to interprete your own drawings and those of others. The book goes into great detail about other self-healing techniques, as well.

Do you want to change? If the answer is YES! then, read this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction and overview September 10, 2013
Format:Paperback
The Art of Healing, by Bernie S. Siegel, MD, provides a sound gateway into the world of archetypal healing for those new to this topic of study and for medical practitioners interested in exploring these tools as a complement to traditional allopathic medicine. Siegel presents a comprehensive overview of archetypal tools currently used in the fields of Spiritual Direction and Psychology, such as dreamwork, creative visualization, writing and art. Through the use of case studies and empirical research, The Art of Healing presents a strong case for the use of these tools in medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment and opens the door to a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
