Book Description

May 15, 2012
The Art Hunters Handbook is an Antiques Roadshow type book that reveals Trade Secrets to hunting down valuable paintings at garage sales and flea markets. The cover photo is the true story of Ripening Pears, a 19th century masterpiece by Joseph Decker bought at a garage sale for $5 and sold to the National Gallery of Art for $1,000,000! Will you find a million-dollar painting for five bucks? Probably not. But you might find a $5,000 painting for $100. Think Of This Book As A Lottery Ticket, the Foxes claim, With Better Odds. The Art Hunters Handbook is a profusely illustrated art book for the average person, not just art collectors, who'd like to make money while having fun. Based on decades of personal experience, it contains dozens of exciting stories of art discovered in garage sales, schools, attics, basements, farmhouses, estates, even in the trash, often bought for very little and sold for a lot. However, in order to find some of the millions of undiscovered paintings that may be waiting for you just around the corner, the authors need to teach you the basics of Art Appraisals (they offer Free Art Appraisals to the general public), and How To Sell Art At Auction, including Sotheby's and Christie's. Believe it or not, by following the simple Art Hunter Tips in this book (like don't assume a painting isn't valuable just because you don't like it, especially modern art), and comparing the Artist Profiles of 120 American, European and Latin American artists, Les and Fox say they'd be surprised if you don't find several valuable paintings a year. How valuable? That's the thrill of the chase! Although this book is intended for everyone who loves TV shows like The Antiques Roadshow, American Pickers, Pawn Stars and Buried Treasure, the Foxes are knowledgeable art experts with a knack for plain talk and common sense. You won't be intimidated by this art book. Instead, will find it as entertaining as a page-turner novel. But what you'll also like is that your $16.95 investment may come back to you a hundred-fold, or maybe a thousand-fold or more, if that weird painting of colored rectangles, or people eating dinner, or a winter landscape, turns out to be something unexpected. The Art Hunters Handbook is not about finding Picassos or Van Goghs. Forgetaboutit. This book will teach you about the other 240,000 listed artists whose paintings are worth $1,000 to $10,000,000, most of whom you've probably never heard of. Like Lyonel Feininger, Emile Gruppe, Hayley Lever. One of these three artists is worth millions. The other two are generally worth $5,000 to $25,000. The only way to find out who's who, and how you can cash in on becoming an Art Hunter, with Les and Sue Fox as your personal guides, is to read The Art Hunters Handbook.

From the Author

New York Times bestselling authors and art experts Les and Sue Fox have been in business for more than 30 years. Together, they have appraised and sold more than $50 million worth of art and collectibles, including a groundbreaking auction of Rare American Gold Coins at the Plaza Hotel in 1988.  The Foxes live and work in Bergen County, New Jersey.  Aside from brokering fine quality 19th and 20th Century American and European art they are also avid collectors of art, and own a beautiful collection of American paintings and folk art which they enjoy on a daily basis.
In addition to art, which has always been their passion, the Foxes have built or renovated 20 luxury homes.  And they created a series of commemorative United States coins for collectors which were combined with the autographs of America's 1976 Bicentennial coin artists and two U.S. Presidents, Gerald R. Ford, and George H.W. Bush.  (See more on our website at  EaglesOfAmerica.com.
Les and Sue have developed a unique program for people with art for sale.  Instead of the traditional options of either selling to an art dealer, or consigning to auction, the Foxes applied their creativity, knowledge and financial resources to invent a new option:  Selling art to a broker (us), who would then sell it at auction as a 50-50 partner.  There is a delicate balance of determining a fair price for art, and still leaving room for the likelihood of a reasonable profit for both partners (you and us.)  But so far our track record has been excellent.  We will be posting testimonials by some of our many satisfied customers.

About the Author

New York Times bestselling authors Les and Sue Fox have been art and rare coin experts for 40 years. Their unique Art Auction Partnership program has connected them to thousands of average Americans, like Alison Beldsoe of North Carolina who found a 1930's painting by Fern Coppedge at her hot dog stand. The Foxes appraised it for her, at no charge, and six months later the painting was sold at auction for $29,800. Les and Sue live in New Jersey, which gives them close access to 20 million people, as well as the New York art and auction market. However, today anything that can happen in real life can happen on the internet. Thanks to digital photography, it is possible to appraise art online. If you need help, you can call upon the resources of the authors of The Art Hunters Handbook. The Foxes only appraise original oil paintings, not prints, reproductions or limited editions. But what they know could fill a book. In fact, here it is, just waiting for you. In addition to art, Les and Sue have written a dozen books about U.S. Silver Dollars and other collectibles. They've arranged thousands of auctions, and they've had professional relationships with two U.S. Presidents. And now, they are available to help you learn about art, and hopefully to help you make some money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! April 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
This informative book is fun and beautifully put together. In the first half, the authors share stories about valuable artwork that was found and purchased incredibly cheap. We're given information on how to tell a reproduction from an original, with photos to illustrate the various points. We're also told about the process of authenticating artwork, and, of course, some of the best places to shop for these hidden treasures.

The second half of the book introduces us to 120 artists whose work is out there waiting to be discovered. Each entry gives us a little information on the artist, as well as a photo and the value of one painting from his/her collection.

This is the perfect book for people who enjoy estate sales and shopping at secondhand stores, and everyone who is interested in art.

If you are interested in such things, and my wife and I are and have been for fifty years now, then I can assure you that you will be delighted with this little book. Now don't let me calling it "a little book" put you off; no, no, no! This work is a class act from cover to cover and I was shocked and at the same time delighted as to the massive amount of information packed between its two covers! Wow! My wife and I have been haunting auction houses and estate sales for years and years seeking out little art treasures and let me assure you...they are lurking out there...you just need to know what to look for and be blessed with a goodly amount of pure luck. I say luck, but knowing somewhat about you're quarry most certainly increases your chances!

As has been stated, there are well over 20,000 known and listed artists in American who are extremely collectable. Much of their work is know, but on the other hand much is not. The authors here have addressed 120 of these artists and their works and given us very nice examples; representations of their works which gives the reader a very good understanding of what to look for when digging through moldy corners of shops, auctions and indeed, barns. Of course this small book will not replace a good art education and certainly is not the beginning and end of all art books, but it does give you a very good start and if your interests lie in this direction, this work will act as a "seed copy" and encourage you to add to your collection of like books and set you to round upon round of research on your computer.

The authors have filled the book with wonderful and practical hints as to what to look for and what pitfalls to avoid. I was grateful that they have addressed the fact that there are many, many "fakes" lurking out there to grab the uninformed. I say "fake" but these are paintings, drawing and such that people do with no evil intent. Many artist copy the work of others to simply learn. I know this for a fact as I d it myself and over the years have turned out some rather remarkable "knock-offs" that could indeed fool the unwary. I never sign these things...they are for practice only, and I would not sell one on a bet, but I have given some away to friends and family and have no idea what they have done with them. (As I have little talent, I suspect that most end up in a closet or attic hidden away so they will not scare children or small furry animals.).

No matter the geographical area you live in. Due to the legendary American mobility which began during the Great Depression and continues to this very day, art work from every area in the country has been scattered to the four winds. The Ozarks, at first thought, may seem an unlikely place for works created in New England or New Mexico or California, but I can assure you that even relatively isolated areas such as ours are a bit of a gold mine. You just never know what will jump out of the bushes.

Now my wife and I have never found one of those zillion dollar painting just setting there waiting to be snatched up...but hey, there is always hope and even if we never are so lucky, we at least have had the pleasure of the hunt' the adventure. On the other hand, we ain't done all that bad over the years either.

This is a very, very well done book. It is informative, entertaining and actually useful. The authors and publishers have done a wonderful job.

I like the Art Hunters Handbook by Les and Sue Fox.

Chapter 4 is particularly good. It provides 120 profiles of artists whose work is valuable, including a nice sample image of each artist's work.

If you find yourself in places where amateurs sell art, consider adding this book to your collection.
