Editorial Reviews

Nonesuch Records releases The Art of Instrumentation: Homage to Glenn Gould, by violinist Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, on what would have been Gould's 80th birthday. The album comprises 11 pieces and arrangements by contemporary composers that quote from or are inspired by works, mostly by Bach, that Gould famously recorded during his career; two Arnold Schoenberg pieces also are drawn upon in one piece.

Gidon Kremer has done it again, recording interesting "new" pieces of music that are a delight to the ears. Kremer also plays the violin solos in the pieces. Works of Bach played by Glenn Gould are the inspiration, as commissioned modern composers arranged the works of strings in their own style, adding distinctive sounds to each piece. The composers include Silvestrov, Pelecis, Kancheli and others. Only one of the works displays angular modernism -- most are firmly rooted in the tonal tradition. The sound is clean and the pieces are well played. If you like Bach transcriptions from older composers and arrangers, such as Elgar, Resphigi, and Stowkowski's efforts, you will very much like this.

Gidon Kremer and his wonderful group masterfully channel the spirit of Glen Gould in this stunning arrangement of Bach. Not to be missed!

I found this rather disappointing, on several levels. As to originality, the idea of transcribing solo Bach piano pieces for small chamber ensembles might have been relatively novel back in the 1980s (e.g. Dmitri Sitkovestky's transcription of the Goldberg Variations), but it has been done and overdone. I have no issue if that which is presented is interesting, but the offerings here sometimes come across as unoriginal if not trite, often lacking in complexity, ... and at worst, as shlocky mushy detractions of a pure original. On the brighter side, the Kancheli at least sounds like Kancheli. The transcription by Poleva for marimba and vibraphone is fun, but even that just reminds one of 1990s Lambarena (Bach to Africa), and Lambarena is much, much more interesting and exciting: been there, done that.

The stated 'homage to Glenn Gould' on the front cover seems terribly contrived if not dubious. Raskatov's transcription of the Prelude and Fugue in Dminor seems closer to Stokowski than Gould. Even as to performance, the rendition of say the quodlibet from the Goldberg variations (Tickmayer Track 10) is anything but Gouldian: it is slurred, cursive and legato ... the antithesis of everything Gould represented in the performance of Bach.

As to presentation: why no track numbers on the rear cover?? Or is it all just meant to be dumbed down muzack / elevator music?
