Editorial Reviews

Nonesuch Records releases The Art of Instrumentation: Homage to Glenn Gould, by violinist Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, on what would have been Gould's 80th birthday. The album comprises 11 pieces and arrangements by contemporary composers that quote from or are inspired by works, mostly by Bach, that Gould famously recorded during his career; two Arnold Schoenberg pieces also are drawn upon in one piece.

1. Dedication to J.S.B. - By Valentin Silvestrov
2. Aria from Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 - By Georgs Pelecis
3. Prelude and Fugue in D minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 851 - By Alexander Raskatov
4. Three Voice Invention in F minor, BWV 795 - By Alexander Wustin
5. Slow Movement from Cembalo Concerto in F minor, BWV 1056 - By Carl Vine
6. Prelude and Fugue in A minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 889 - By Raminta Serksnyte
7. Bridges to Bach - By Giya Kancheli
8. Sarabande in E minor from Partita No. 6, BWV 830 - By Leonid Desyatnikov
9. Prelude and Fugue in F-sharp minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 883 - By Victoria Vita Poleva
10. After Gould: Goldberg Variations Nos. 30, 19, 4, 18, 22, 26 and Intermezzi from Arnold Schönberg's O - By Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer
11. Aria from Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 - By Victor Kissine

Gidon Kremer has done it again, recording interesting "new" pieces of music that are a delight to the ears. Kremer also plays the violin solos in the pieces. Works of Bach played by Glenn Gould are the inspiration, as commissioned modern composers arranged the works of strings in their own style, adding distinctive sounds to each piece. The composers include Silvestrov, Pelecis, Kancheli and others. Only one of the works displays angular modernism -- most are firmly rooted in the tonal tradition. The sound is clean and the pieces are well played. If you like Bach transcriptions from older composers and arrangers, such as Elgar, Resphigi, and Stowkowski's efforts, you will very much like this.

This album by Gidon Kremer and his ensemble is just okay. The sound quality and ensemble playing are excellent. However, after reading the product description and other reviews I was thinking that this album would feature pieces that cleverly synthesized Bach's style and use his contrapuntal techniques as a jumping-off point. Instead, the pieces all sound like mundane orchestrations of some of Bach's keyboard works. I own an album of Bach's Goldberg Variations arranged for strings by Dmitry Sitkovestky played by the Britten Sinfonia which is really great. This album by Kremer sounds like a mediocre version of that same idea. I thought the pieces presented here would be more modern and incorporate more dissonance, contemporary techniques, complex rhythms, etc., but they don't. Perhaps my expectations were too high?

Gidon Kremer and his wonderful group masterfully channel the spirit of Glen Gould in this stunning arrangement of Bach. Not to be missed!

This is one of those rare free transcriptions of Bach's music that is as beautiful as it surprises. A true homage to Gould as well as to Bach.
