Great info, great pics.

The title calls them "Classic Album Covers", but as you'll see, the word "classic" may be stretching it a bit.

A great present for a LP buff, and a very pretty coffee table book.

This (exactly) 400-page volume goes a bit farther than the many other "album cover" books on the market in describing the images on the jackets and acknowledge ring the designer, photographer or artist. There is at least a paragraph of text for each of the 350+ covers shown. The title calls them "Classic Album Covers", but as you'll see, the word "classic" may be stretching it a bit.

The authors obviously did some research to get their facts and also take time to give their opinions on why certain images were used. The arrangement of the book is definitely quirky. The authors chose a definitive subject for the first chapter - Rock and Roll - but them grouped covers by such odd-ball themes as "Ego", "Escape", "Identity", "Politics" and, of course, "Sex". That's why you will find The Doors' Jim Morrison (Morrison Hotel) on the page facing Tennessee Ernie Ford (Let Me Walk With Thee) in the "Ego" section. I have no idea why the cover of The British band The Flukes' album Six Wheels on My Wagon is in the "Real World" section. By now you've figured out that this is a collection of International albums, and some whose covers have more interest than their contents. So quite a few of these might be new to you. There are jazz, comedy and budget instrumental albums included. I guess I was surprised to see the omission of what many consider the sexiest album photo of all - Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream (and other delights) in the "sex" section, but maybe they couldn't get the reproduction rights.

So it's a fun book to look through and read. And there is an index by performer, album name and designer or photographer. As a bonus, at over four pounds, you could also use to keep your LP record collection from falling over.

It's reasonably priced for an "art book" too.

I got this as a Christmas gift this year and it is beautiful. I couldn't figure out what was so heavy? The box had a sticker "Heavy" on it. It didn't shake or rattle. When I opened it I was so surprised at how table top elegant it is. On top of that it has a red see thru plastic case that you slip the book out of as well. An extra touch. The pictures are great, the whole thing from beginning to end connected you to the era of all the classic albums.

So if music was your thing thru all those years...this is such a plus bonus. We have talked about making a music room one day & it will honestly be a focus point out on the table. You have to grab it & look thru it if it's in front of you. It's so sturdy, well made, pretty. It's why I called it "table top elegant". This book doesn't need to be on a shelf. It's index is divided by album cover name & also by the artist as well. It doesn't go by years & start from the earliest leading up. It is divided by topics. Rock & Roll, Sex, drugs, and so forth. Which I really like a lot. If your a guest visiting and you see this, you won't have a few hours to sit and read thru a picture book. So the dividing of it's chapters by topic lets you zero in immediately to the types of albums you loved the most. I love Trivia. We call that useless knowledge. It has a loads of tid bits & trivia about the artist & that certain album your looking at in the book.

It's such a personal "perfect" gift if you share music with someone you love. It's owning a record of our past for sure.

This is a fantastic compendium of artistic and evocative album covers, taking one back in time as well as provoking memories of some great music. I think that there is a bit too much editorializing in the descriptions, however, which is the only reason I don't give it five stars. I bought this for a friend and he likes it, so overall, I am happy about it.
